I just acquired one .....Reconditioned , Guaranteed, New Battery , $450 , The Vendor may have more???

Nope Register for free on line with NOAA.( ?) All Above Board Legal Eagle etc etc .. I Have yet to register mine as its not in my hands..Its in Florida..I am NOT

I wonder if it partly reflects the 'unsinkable' nature of Macs, combined with our tendency to keep within 40 miles of land: makes the guitar-playing+waving a tempting alternative.
Although with all the fridges and air-conditioners and house batteries some of our colleagues suggest, one wonders if the sucker might just sigh and quietly slip beneath the waves.

I had one on my big boat for Carribean trip but for coastal cruiseing most have the SPOT or I phone for emergency quick send for your location.
I think those going to Bahamas should have one or any traveling they do were SPOT or Iphone can't send distress signals.

Boaters often find a false sense of security in technology. Eeeh, I'm sure they are fine. Still, no substitute for prudence.
As for the unsinkable part, I don't find any comfort in the marketing. If my boat gets holed, I fully expect to be clinging to some hunk of styrofoam as the rest goes under or is upside down.

I wouldn't get my hopes on that unless the boat blows apart spilling the chunks of Styrophone.
Best to stay with the ship until it starts to goes down. (If you have time you can always unscrew the 4 bolts of engine and disconnect the cables and throw out batteries and anchors).
I don't think you will ever have to go that route.

Great Deal... Two more reasons for those in need or desire to have a unit..
For me, I figure if what I got , was BOUGHT by the Coast Guard there is no question as to how well built / rugged they are..

Here in Oz, I dont think you'd find a Mac without an Epirb in it. Any vessel travelling more than 2 nautical miles offshore, even in reasonably protected bays etc, is required to have one. The GME ones start at about $400 new and you have to re-register them every 3 years (I think its 3) and get a new battery fitted every so many years.
Just about everything in the US seems to be about half the price, (including Macs!) so I'm amazed that epirbs are not much cheaper than it would appear!

Well there is for sure a HUGE disparity in the Units we see in this thread.. One looks very much like a toy.. one you would buy at Toys R Us. The Coast Guard Unit? Not at all.. Why? The WHY I have to ask is also ? With all the money we spend on this and that in our lives why would we be so hesitant with some purchases and not others? I am guilty of this as well.. Why do I think so little about dropping a $100 or more on a dinner for the wife and I and then hesitate when paying a few dollars more for something that might be more important , last me longer
?? Maybe its human nature?

I must admit I know almost nothing about EPIRBS but I would think they have to go through some sort of testing and certification so figured one would be as good as another. The units I was looking at are personal epribs or PLBs I think. The one you got looks like a vessel mounted eprib that can float out in the event of a capsize, no need to manually activate it.

I am in your shoes...I know almost nothing about EPIRBS So I found myself relying on someone I trust, and who has one, and he and his extensive group of freinds ( most if not all ) have EPIRBS.. Among this group of fellows, you can find at least one of their boats 30 to 100 miles out on any given day that the weather is not so bad, that its just too dangerous to be out there.. I went with his judgement.. Its just part of an insurance package I carry..?
Over the last 25 years I have spent well over $50,000.00 on insurances and so far, I have had 2 pieces of auto glass replaced and nothing on anything else..
In The End ? Its each to his own....
