Replacement steering

Post by Jason Carrier »

The steering just broke on my 26M yesterday. It had been giving me problems since I bought the boat. I wanted to know what the groups recommend as the best replacement. I think I would like a Hydrolic system, and one I do not have to do much to switch from sail to motor. Any and all ideas are welcomed.

A few people have installed inexpensive BayStar hydraulic systems for around $500 in parts, both outboard in the engine well and inboard inverted. So far there have been no reports of problems on this board, and I intend to do it at the first sign of trouble. Search the forums on the term BayStar for installation reports.

There has been a few after markets installed on these boats.. Look in the search and the mods.. None I am aware of had issues.. Seems to be an eventual issue on the M's.. maybe the X's too? How Old is your M? How big is the motor your using?

Jason,

You may find these mods inspiring.

An absolute necessity if you have a big engine.
They have worked perfectly for me with only having to replace a sticky cable once.

Happy power sailing.
