San Francisco/Campbel area. Help to buy boat.

Post by kevinnem »

Hello eveyone. As per teh craiglist post that was mentioned a few days ago, I am interested in buying the boat. talking with seller RE some price stuff, that I assume will be worked out. Problem is that I am not in the area, and was wondering if there was anyone that could have a look over the boat and make sure it is in reasonable condition?

I am also interested if anyone knows of a broker, or some other way to "buy" this boat, remotely without flying down there? maybe a marina owner can facilitate trasfer, or something?

Thanks, Kevin Nemrava.

The same feature that makes these boats so appealing (low price) unfortunately makes it unappealing for brokers....to be fair...who is going to spend 5000 USD to broker a 15000 USD boat??

I missed the CL link, but can you get the seller to send you more pic's or take some video and post to you tube.

the only other option I can think of, is to ask for help on some of the other (more subscribed) boards

sailnet, trailersailor, ask an owner, etc.

one thing I would say, is good deals don't last too long, and if its really a good deal, and is still for sale after a few weeks, that might say something...

PS: your location is?

Surveyor:

Peter Minkwitz
351 Embarcadaro, Oakland, Ca 94606
Tel: 510-465-2527

I don't know what he would charge ou to go to Campbell, which is in the south bay, about an hour from Oakland. Peter is well respected around here. You can ask him to help you and for advice. He's very experienced. I've used him and was pleased. A surveyor's report is useful when negotiating a final deal.

A good surveyor can give you a rough idea of what you'll need to do to make the boat safe and reliable. Peter used to work at Svendsens Boat Yard as a foreman, so he's got a real-world perpsective on the cost of fixing shortcomings. That' really important.

An other idea is to call the San Francisco area MacGregor dealer at 415-456-2644
Arena Yachts re-sells used boats, as listed on this page of their website.
http://www.arenayachtsales.com/got_a_used_macgregor.htm

Other local surveyors can be found here or in google,
http://sfsailing.com/cgi-bin/mbi/surveyors.cfm

Hope this is helpful.

Judy has the right idea but it you want someone to take a quick look and perhaps take some specific pictures, I'm not far away.
Shoot me an email at steveb48 @ aol. com if I can help.

Road Trip. Purchased a Hummer on eBay for $40,000 several years ago. Long ways away. It was at one of those investment car lots where everything looks new. I opened the hood, and moved a piece of sound dampening insulation, and found the condition the vehicle was in before they pressure washed it.

I told the manager, pass, and drove home.

I agree that these are the minimum things you should consider, in addition to hiring a surveyor if you believe it makes sense. (I'm a cheapskate, and didn't get a survey on my little $3,500 boat, but for a more substantial purchase, I'd hire one.)

PS I live in Calgary , Alberta Canada.

getting it home has it s own challenges, but I am sure if I can get a boat at a good price, then I can make it happen.

Calgary and Denver are Sister Cities and we enjoy an excellent relationship--except in hockey :D

Americans are jumping ship at record numbers. Many are going south of the border like Jesse Ventura has done. I have too much stuff to walk away.
