How many of us plan to slip our boats in the next sailing season?

Rates here are $800 and change for plain old dock, $1800 and change for solid year round docks with water and electricity. Season is about from May to middle of October, but several people take in and out at freeze times.

Deposit does not mean I will get a slip.

In fact, the odds are against me. Most years new people want in, but there is no more room. There is a better chance of getting a mooring ball. Better than nothing.

I trailer ... Out here in Miami it's simply not economically feasible to keep the boat in the water.
The only other option is to keep the boat with the mast up on trailer close to Key Largo for about $140/month.

There are a fair number of advantages to trailering ... I am happy with it.

Hi Gary,

I keep my boat on a trailer and put in for a few days at a time in the San Diego or Oceanside public docks. You can stay for up to 15 days at a time for <$20/day. We will typically put in on a Saturday and pull out sunday night two weeks later.

I've also made a list of marinas in town with guest slips and their charges. Took about two hours calling every marina listed on Google Maps to get all their rates, and now I've got a list I can go by. They all keep guest slips available so you're not competing with permanent residents, and it's only about $30/day for the best priced ones. A little scheduling and a little moving around means we've got the boat in the water most of the season when we're in town, and I'm only putting in and taking out six or so times per year.

Look into guest slips and trailer storage. It's WAY easier on the boat maintenance as well.

Here a wet slip is about $160/mo with required 12 month contract. That's a little steep for me considering winds are too strong in the spring and too weak in the summer. The local sailing club has dry mast-up storage for like $250 for 6 months which seems more reasonable.

Hey Yukon Bob, down here in Montreal we call Manitoulin up north

I am a member of a Yacht club here (sailing club more like it). Prices vary in the area but our club is $800 for membership and about the same for a slip for a 26ft boat. Bar minimum is another $300 but that's a foregone conclusion... A mooring ball can be had for $160 I think instead of the slip fee.

It may seem like a lot but I can ride over there after work on my bicycle(10 minutes) and simply cast off in about 5 minutes after finding the engine key, plugging in the gps and opening a beer. I get a lot of sailing done on week days because of that.

Fred, you might want to try the Miami Yacht club on the Rickenbacker causeway. I looked into leaving my boat there during the winter and it was not bad if you leave it on the trailer. The Keys might be more fun though. DAveB mentioned http://southdademarina.com/ . It looks like half the price. I pay attention to all you guys more when my boat is out of the water as I only fantasize about sailing until next May!

That name is familiar up here as well, and the fees are close to mine, just curious (ya never know). There are several Mac's up here but they seem to stick to the fresh water as I have yet to see another one in the salt, other than one in Juneau and that's not Alaska man from here. It was a live aboard from Washington who was in the process of selling.

You can slip on the Hudson up near Albany for about 1500 for the season, with the rate getting progressively more andmore expensive as you head to NYC. By the time you reach Haverstraw, slips are unaffordable and unavailable but there are plenty of moorings to be had - usually with good tender service.

FWIW, $400/mo is a good rate in miami for a slip with electric.

and you can find them in FLL for $250, but its an hour motoring to the ocean.


but, I would not leave the boat in the water if there is a chance your lake will freeze. I know some run bubblers, but why take the chance...

Long Island rates are as follows:

Town of "Crookhaven", Mt Sinai Long Island Sound : $64/ft a season which is May 1st-Nov 1st
As you can see, LAIKA cost me $1664. I used her only 10 times this season making that ~$166.40/sail.
I was on the waiting list for 10 years.

Unfortunately I had a VERY narrow slip with the pilings leaning inboard, almost lost the mast twice.
Much less what IRENE did to her aft stbd quarter (Granted I should have moved her so it really is my fault.)
Always had to wait for the perfect conditions to get in and out of the slip, which were NOT perfect for sailing! lol

Fairness to say I did practically live aboard most of the summer having AC.

Most private marina's around here are ~$100+/ft, plus you are required to store it during the winter @ $35/ft and that they paint it for you ~ $13/ft.
I priced LAIKA at one Marina for ~$4K a year.

I'm dropping the Slip, and going with a mooring. $150 season permit, $250 mooring storage and even though I have a Portland Pudgy Dinghy, I think I'll opt for the launch service $800 this season ajust to check it out, and still save $$$. I'll probably go back to using my dinghy in '13.

Though I lose the AC, I can BBQ again and enjoy privacy on my own little island!! Happiness is directly proportional to your neighbors shortcomings at the slip! Granted, walking right up to the boat is nice, but if you prefer being "out there", it's sooooo much easier (worry free) coming off and on a mooring.

Depends on the lake Gary. Even though I sail mostly out of a slip, our lake has a lot of shallow areas that are perfect for a Mac. The keel guys are often stuck in the marina late in the season when water levels drop. The option of pulling it out and going for a trip is not much different than if it's sitting in the driveway.

We pay about $1500 for the year, which includes the slip and storage on the hard during the winter. In this area (Solomons, MD) there's nothing really inexpensive. This was the best deal I could find.

Gary, I think it would be very wise to consider a keel boat if you plan to slip your boat at one place all the time. I pay $1500 for my slip at a mountain lake, no electric or water hookups. I am on a high mountain lake and the season is only from the beginnig of June to third weekend in October. Ambiance and mountain views from the lake are spectacular. I also have a weekend home close to the marina so I never sleep on the boat. I did not do a lot of research before purchasing the boat, just saw it at an auction and purchased it. I also have no plans to travel or visit faraway places with the boat and the lake is only a couple of miles long, so don't really need, or much use, the 50 hp motor. Therefore in retrospect I think I would have much happier with the increased stabilty of a keel boat. I didn't think this thing out as much as you and now I live my decision. My wife and I have adapted to the and discovered the secret of reefing early and we enjoy the boat on most summer weekends without the hassel of putting in and pulling out. Live and learn.
