Found A Weak Place On The Boat Seat (x)

Post by GaryMayo »

Under the seat in the area of the backrest where it touches the transum, it is paper thin, broken through and splintered. Looks to possibly have wood inside and maybe rot inside.

Biggie? The seat seams solid to sit on. Still I was quite surprised.

Any other weak seats in the group?

Not the norm, though wear can occur there.

It does not look like wear it looks like it was paper thin and just fractured splintered from use. Then after it broke through it began to collect moisture and rot.

When I would be out in rough weathe, 25+ degees heeling over, I would hear strange noises coming from the seat area.

Save the Seat..this might give you extra incentive in your weight loss program.. :D :D

If its in the seat itself, and not the transom, not a biggie. As Ray says, no wood in the seat in either :macm: or :macx:

Easy to fab somethinng out of wood if it does need replacement

Funny thing I'd like to point out....
My 1st '02 :macx: the seat seemed quite solid if I remember correctly, I did sell her in early '05.
However, my 2nd '02 :macx: had a significant "spongy" feel to the seat. Also, I seem to notice several areas of the glass does not feel as firm as it should be.
Now I had been on, and owned boats, with cored deck issues and know the feeling, and while not as pronounced, I do get this feeling on certain areas about the boat, knowing there is NO wood core on this boat.
Even though I believe this 2nd :macx: is several hundred builds newer than my first, I'm wondering as it was sold in spring of '02 that the factory was skimping on the workmanship now that the :macm:'s were coming out. I also noticed use of 5200 appeared skimpy as well compared to my first.

Back to the seat, I merely drilled a couple of holes underneath, filled it with expanding foam, and that fixed it. Covered the holes back up with MarineTex.

Gary.. I noticed from you other posts.. You are the owner of a Macgregor 25, Maybe back in the past century they may have used wood in those seats..??

My seat also separated at two places, where it hit the port long seat and where it hit the port upper gunwale/transom. It even collected water in it when left up during a rain.

All that was required was to remove it to the garage, add fiberglass cloth and resin inside the improper openings and cracks, clamp it tight, dry, then release and add layers of fiberglass cloth and resin outside, dry, then sand, and gelcoat and polish. Good as new, probably better than new.

IMHO, your seat, and mine, got slammed too hard a few times and separated. Water in there did the rest of the damage.

Fiberglass is easy to work with and you know what you have afterwards.

Seat is now at the fiberglass repair shop being repaired. Looked to be a thin spot that broke through.
