sailing the Northern Chesapeake

Post by john3357 »

Storeytime was dunked in the Chesapeake for the first time this past weekend. After a perfect launch from Havre De Grace (City Marina) we sailed East and then motored south to the Elk River. We anchored in Cabin John Creek and witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. Woke to placid waters only to find the Chesapeake with a strong northern wind and white caps. The trip that took 6 hours on Sunday took 2 hours on Monday.

Any other sailors out in the Northern Chesapeake??

John,
Welcome currently we sail on the Delaware river about 18 miles North of Philadelphia.
We sailed (more like motored) that area last year. We left from PA. Delaware River to C&D canal to Baltimore and on to Annapolis and back. It was a great trip! We are looking into getting a slip at Maryland Marina in Middle river area for next season (Admiral is still putting pressure for me to stay local so not positive I can make the move).
I know the area there and it is beautiful... sailed for the day there with a friend last October and it was perfect....except for a 2 hour drive from home....

Typically we charter once a year out of Rock hall in May,
This year we chartered a 42' Jeanneu from Rock Hall to Baltimore and Annapolis we had about 5 boats heading out with us. We have been doing that trip for about 18 years now and have not had a bad trip yet
Maybe I will see you around next season....

Matt,

If you end up with agreement that a 2 hour drive is acceptable, you really should check out Great Oak Landing - on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake - directly across from Middle River. http://mearsgreatoaklanding.com/

The facilities are excellent, and Fairlee Creek provides both great shelter and direct access to open water. There are also currently some vacant 30' slips, and it would be nice to have another Mac in the marina (although we do get frequent transients). We have crossed over to Middle River on several occasions, and always find the amount of traffic there unpleasant... but there are surely lots of happy boaters there. All in all, it's hard to find a bad place to be on the Chesapeake. 8)

John, I am slipped at Bay Boat Works, on the North East River as well as my good friend's V22, Whimsey. We travel up and down the northern bay on a pretty regular basis. In fact, last sunday we were heading north from the Sassafras after spending sat night anchored in Turners Creek. There were 3 of us, a blue hulled Columbia 26, Whimsey the v22 and my V25, Miss Ad-Venture. We probably crossed paths at some point. Other nice places for shallow draft boats are Still Pond and Wharton Creek, which are easily reached from HDG. These places usually are crowded, but pull up the keel and rudder and you can have plenty of room all to yourself! If you ever want to head over to the North East river, give me a heads up and maybe we can get together.

I (and several other Macs) am at Casa Rio Marina off the West River about 10 miles south of Annapolis. And there are at least three Macs that I know of that use the boat ramp at Sandy Pt State Park just at the western base of the Bay Bridge.

Hoping to be out on the water tonight and tomorrow night...and going to a restuarant with dockage somewhere just south of Baltimore. Unless my boss comes back from her meeting in 30 minutes and tells us we have to come in this weekend.

If anyone wants to have a Mac Gathering in the Northern Chesapeake area just let me know

If anyone wants to go to Jacksonville FL over Labor Day weekend for the Jacksonville Macgregor Get-Togehter just let me know...I am trailering down there.

And I will probalby try to go the Pirate Festival (or whatever they are calling it) being hosted by NCSail in Beaufort, NC over the 30 Sep - 2 Oct weekend.

Cheers,
Jim

You will a a ball at pirate fest. My wife and I went for the first time last year and it was also our first time at the coast. We had the best time and plan on being there for 4 days this year.

I saw the link on Facebook. Looks good but I got to beg for a 3-day kitchen pass from CINC-House.

Haven't seen a link here yet.
