Custom Paint Job for my 26M

Post by u12fly »

I thought I recall some time back (within a few years) there were a few pictures of custom paint jobs, but as I did a cursory scan of the mac mods I could not really find any. Back in 2009, I bought a neglected 2006 :macm: with the ultimate plan to eventually paint it. I had some repairs to do on the boat to make her sea-worthy, but after that, we rode the wind in late 2009. In 2010, I worked on interior modifications of the boat and this spring I started painting her. The boat’s original blue gel coat hull was really weathered and faded... So, we started off by sanding and sanding and sanding, then chemically cleaning the boat before applying a base primer of white, to which we painted the boat white! In between the white we are adding a paint scheme similar to my sketch below. Although not seen in this sketch the color will be white, black, metallic blue and metallic silver.

I should be able to post a color sketch in a few days...

I've toyed with the idea too Chris..
I have owned myself and painted for others many Custom Painted Cars Vans and Motorcycles..
As long as you understand that a Custom Painted anything is ....in the end...worth less on the open market and often takes longer to sell than a stock unit . The more stylized it is, the more aggravated those numbers can become. As long as your of the mind set, that it may cost you from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars up front and make your boat harder to sell and in the end, worth less than the stock one sitting right next to it .. If thats the case your Good To Go..
From years of experience, mine and others......
No one seems to want a Custom Painted or Changed "anything" thats not all but perfect ......at the offering. That's to ask, would you buy someone else's custom painted boat that had scratches and nicks and a host of other possible cosmetic issues? Would you make a top dollar offer knowing there is no way to easily restore it back to its former Glory..
I would only make the suggestion....that you consider using "Applied" Graphics...
As I said, I have owned numerous Custom Painted Units and I truly enjoyed owning them. However I knew ahead of time the possible issues I would face , when it was time to sell it.. ( Perfect example is my wife's 1970 MGB Convertible.. Its not worth what I have tied up in parts let along time. But its exactly they way SHE wanted it...Wrong Body , Interior , Top and Tonneau cover, colors.. so what ...she loves it ...but its worth next to NOTHING Now...)
Ive been involved with the painting of more than one Corvette ... back to its original stock color so the owner could sell it.. Selling Custom Painted Motorcycles , can be a nightmare unless painted by a Nationally Recognized Painter and he has "Signed " the bike somewhere and you have receipts to prove he did in fact , paint it.. The Simpler... The Better.. for resale...

I'll be anxious to see how it comes out.

I'll also take the opposite side of the fence from "Dive" Since I tend to hold on to things I think little of how what I will do to them will effect the resale value. I'm interested in being happy with them myself and and want them to best fit my needs and not worry much about how they will fit someone else's and it has worked out.

I've built two other houses other than the one we are in now and they were both very unique and unconventional in either design and/or construction technique. I wondered when it came to sell them if they would be on the market for long. They both sold very quickly for what I was asking.

I know my street rod truck is worth more painted with a custom flamed paint job that if it was only in primer. Now I will agree that if you are going to sell something and then at that moment decide to put a custom paint job on it you probably won't get your money back, but a lot of guys that paint themselves, not hire it out, will get more for their hot rod painted vs. in primer and will cover the paint costs. Maybe not get a lot for their labor, but the car will sell faster as a lot of guys out there want a finished car and not a project car. If they hire the whole job out then they most likely won't get their money back.

If you are going to keep the boat a while paint the darn thing anyway that makes you guys happy and enjoy it,

Yeah, I would agree, own your boat for you, and not for the next guy. If it wasnt looked after and needs paint, do it anyway you like, and we are looking forward to the pics

I to have to agree with Sumner, a quality paint job always adds value in all of my experiences with custom paint.Could be others paint job quality was maybe not quite what they thought it was.

I'm torn... Definately not in the 'keep it stock school' as everyone mods their Mac's, so what's the difference with the outside. You could even say my nice blue hull is a 'factory' mod. However the applique graphics are very interesting, and I'd love to check out the variable costs of doing this.

Hard sanding for a total paint over is definately a one way trip.

This would be a good forum subject! Send in an 'edited' picture of what you'd change the factory stock to if you had the chance.
