Mast up time

Post by Catigale »

Bent on the genny getting ready for Cuttyhunk next week

Single handed, mast in trailer position to rigged with boom, 15 minutes

Does not include the 15 minutes spent running back and forth getting bitten by yellow jackets...grapefruit size nest on the aux anchor. :|

Cat, we use one of those fake paper wasp nest thingee's, hanging from the boat when at home. Seems to work quite well keeping the little critters at bay.
Had a mud dauber nest inside on the transom last year - a little scary at first until we realized he was only pi$$ at not having a chance to pack properly for the holidays!

Dollar store electric zapper paddles are magic ..... put a led closet light on the handle and you can hunt in the dark.

Does not mean 'ready to sail of course' I have quick pins, but none of the tricks like lifeline release and that stuff.

Also, I dont have a Mast raising system which saves time getting the mast up, until you throw your back out and cant sail for 6 months.

I really do have to get one and start using it. Lifting the mast plus genny furler is possible, but the MRS is the way to go for this.

Hi Steph

Went to Highlanders to get my M ready for a sail week.
5 wasp nets were waiting for me
2 in the cabin, on the underside of the companionway hatch
2 under the helm seat
1 under the gas tank locker

I did not see any of them until it was too late

I was in the cabin for 10 min before I felt like something was watching me

Stood up, turned around, and I was starring right into the eyes of a wasp guarding his home, with another one 10 inches away from that one.....

Do I need to tell you there is only 1/2 clearance between my head and the hatch.......

They were guarding the way out, so I hightailed it to the vberth until I could formulate a game plan

Made it out the hatch
Off to buy some Raid
Back for battle

That is when I found the other 3 hives..... or rather.... they found me

Cat, I converted my :macx: mast raising system to a :macm: and can handle the furler while stepping the mast from the foredeck location--way too easy 8) We always produce mast raising envy at the marina while the Catalina 25 boys line up waiting to wrestle with a stationary gin pole :D

I copied Eric Hardtle and Taho Jack's :macx: mast raising mod http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=552 . I don't have any pics other than Jack's but it looks exactly like the :macm: system.

The great thing about this system is that you can work the winch with one hand from the foredeck while guiding the furler with the other. The winch can be locked and hold the mast taught to fix the forestay pin. If you keep your jib furled on the forestay, this system has enough power to get the job done. I think BWY has a conversion kit as well.

so in the pics it looks like the winch is 1/3 the way up the mast raising pole. is that about right?

The pole is 6' and I have my winch axle at 3'---but I don't think it really matters--put it in a comfortable location to work the winch.

A few weeks ago we had an incident with bees at he house next door to us that I had never heard of or seen before. My German Shepherd and I were on the front lawn smelling around, when she came running out from between houses looking at her backside (my wife does this too) as if she had been stung. So back into the house we went.

The next day I told my neighbor and we investigated - - - he had just had his stucco house painted. At the front of his house attached to the wall about two feet up from the ground was a football sized and shaped colony of bees - - - no hives just bees on top of each other. So he called his exterminator who came out and told him - - - this is no problem; they are just resting; they like the weird color of your house (he he); they will be gone all by themselves in a week. I personally have never heard of this phenominom. (sic)

So my neighbor and I were examining the colony 6 days later and he said - - - "if they are still here in the morning I'm calling the exterminator back to get rid of them". Well, the bees must have heard us; the next morning they were all gone.

That's phenomenal! On a good day, it takes me 30-35minutes from beginning rigging until I'm pulling the trailer out from under her in the water. 40-45 minutes is my normal time. Guess I need study your video and practice more!
