is a 90 etec going to make the grade

Post by cruasder »

Hi Guys
I'm a Kiwi from New Zealand we have owned a 2006 M for about 18 mths now had our share of thrills and not to many spills yet thank goodness for a good motor in times of need . Have been reading this forum for a while now and really appreciate feedback, thoughts and support you offer to fellow Mac owners
At Easter we had a Mac get together 6 boats in total in Akaroa Harbour ( about an hour east of the shaking city Christchurch) couple of races (the organisers didn't tell us where the bouys were so we had to follow them thats why we got 6th in both races that my story anyway) BBQ's, a few cold ones and learn't a lot
I'm hoping some one can help I am still keen on single skiing and would like to upgrade the 50 yammy sometime to maybe a 90 etec that would acheive about 30 mph/50 kph hauling my 90 kg body along on top of the water, beach starting would be a bonus has anybody done such a thing behind the Mac
Would really appreciate a bit of feedback
Thanks Guys
Cheers

Not sure you have the right boat for what you are looking to accomplish.
I have skied behind my M with a 75
2 skis, not 1
Max speed like that, 2 required in the boat by law, pulling me 175lb, barely reached 20mph.
No way are you going to hit 30 with that kind of config on a Mac M.
Maybe, maaaaybe with an X and Billy's 140 zoom zoom.

A smooth Mac bottom with no keel line, or chines could get pretty scary at 30+mph during a hard turn!

Lots if owners want greater speed while powering. What about underwater lifting rails? Anyone tried them?
The might help the boat plane easier and at sailing speeds would not offer much drag. Not dire if they would help with pulling a skier off the beach. Think you might need twin 100s for that.

That's funny, Macgregor says you can go 24MPH with a 50HP. :o

Buy a nice jetski for a dinghy and ski behind it!

Art, most of people who converted to the 90 hp 4 stroke and Vidios doing 30 mph. Last time I water skied was 40 years ago and solum was 22-26 mph and bouble skies were 22 mph. Plus.
That being said the boat can do it well once the person is up.
The trick is empty ballest and haveing the hole shot big Diamiter Prop like the 90 Evenrude/Johnson.
Every 100 lbs you put aboard will lower your speed 1mph.(if you have person's aboard get their weight far forward until the skier is up than can go aft.)
Hope this helps.

I have a 90 E-tec and I don't know that it has enough torque for what you want to do. E-tecs are great engines, just make sure you have a reliable E-tec mechanic nearby

But since you want to go big, I'd recommend looking at the V4 115 or 130HP E-tecs. More torque and power.

If you do get to the trial stage, I would suggest a second ski to get you out of the hole that you kick off as soon as you're up. Will need less power to get you up, and fewer gallons to plow out of the way for you! (More energy left over to carve). Any old ski from a yard sale will do.

That, or a sitting dock start, coil a bit of rope up in front so the boat can get some momentum before the slack gets taken up. Takes judgment! :|

As you might be able to tell, when kids, we tried skiing behind just about anything!

Hi Guys
Thankyou for the feedback maybe a bit of trial and error needed, have been skiing for about 30 years and still have the fizz boat with a 70 johnson on it tried to sell it to my 22 year old son when we bought the Mac but he thought better if mum and dad owned it and he borrowed it
Be nice when out sailing the wind drops and its 25 degrees cel. throw the rope out the back and away we go
Just nice to one shop stop
Thanks again
Cheers
