Well hello...

Post by coolchange »

Hi, and allow me to introduce myself.

If all goes well I will be the new owner of a 26x purchased solely on the wing and a prayer that I will enjoy the boat as much as most owners seem to. I have been boating in the Northwest for over 15 years but always in a power boat. and most recently a Bayliner 2855. Favorite cruising: Willamette river, Columbia River, San Juans, Puget Sound, Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast not in any order...basically wherever there is water.

I have sailed some with friends but never with full responsibility..always a different state of mind. So, I will be reading the site, often. I will be asking for help, often. Don't mind asking lame questions, or being pointed to threads of previous discussions on a topic.

If all goes well I will be splashing in at Swantown Friday and spending a night or two. If anyone is moored there or planning to be in the area at that time I would love to meet you and pick your brain about my new toy.

PS: Coolchange is the name of the first "named" boat we bought and has been around for awhile on BaylinerOwners and iboatNW.

Welcome! What outboard does it come with? Don't be afraid to motor around for a while and ease into sailing. Frankly while Macs are often a first sailboat, modern ballast/daggerboard boats are more difficult to sail than a classic full keel sailboat, and although I've been sailing for fifteen years I've had to learn quite a bit more about sailing than I needed to know on my very forgiving Columbia Sabre. But the Mac is so much more capable and family friendly that I've enjoyed the stretch!

Gdday from downunder Bleakco,

I echo what Matt has said and others said it to me two years ago when I got my new :macm: . Take your time. Even as a power boat she will handle very differently to other boats you have had. Remember the water ballast alone with the shape of the bottom gives you a lot of momentum and it takes longer to stop. Give yourself more time on approach and docking and then you can keep your lovely hull without a ding. Unfortunately I learned the hardway! :x I am still learning and this forum has some guys with wonderful knowledge and talent who will point you in the right direction and answer most things.

Happy safe sailing

My apologies Coolchange and Bleakco
for mixing you up.

The Gdday from Australia Coolchange was nonetheless sincere. My tired brain quits on me occasionally. Tired to stop it going but it seems I was not quick enough.

Cheers

Yep agreed from my end as well. Though I have little to no real previous experience with sailing..
That said . They are quite easy to sail. Like many sports .. You get the basics down in a matter of hours or days and then spend the rest of your life getting better at it..

Welcome aboard. The X is made to learn as u go. Easy to sail (or motor). This board has tons of information so use it (or us). I know I did and with limited sailing experience it sure helped :!:

Planning on putting my X back in her slip next wk, now that the rain has finally stopped :?

Thank you all for the welcome...like I said if all goes well I will be a new owner on Friday.

The advice to take it easy, is easy for me to listen to because it is the same I would give. Planning to get where there are no hard surfaces and practice the basics.

Someone asked: and the answer is a Nissan 50 (2 cycle) Does anyone have a ballpark on how many hours per gallon at mid range speed? I assume the sweet spot is hull speed and the curve steepens from there.

Does anyone use a floscan or fuel flow meter on these or just head home when the first tank dries up. ( I am coming from a boat that, with lots of monitoring, could do 2mpg on a dead calm surface.) :?

(I understand that with the stick thing and the cloth up no gas need be used :) )

Cheers.

Would that be around Ullapool somewhere or a bit lower! I understand you get a bit of the gulfstream up that way. How does your MacM handle those temperamental waters? My favourite place in all the World - NW Scotland :) :) :)

Well...I am now the proud owner of a 1999 26x, which based on registration stickers has not been in the water since 2007, has a jib that has never been unfurled, a stove with the plastic still on the cover, unused porta potty, brand new battery, and lots of other fun stuff.

But mostly I wanted to post to thank Bob (Bleakco) for offering to show me around the new boat. He not only came over to Swantown marina to visit he demonstrated rigging the mast and jib and many other details that it would have taken weeks to figure out but he even came back to help take it down. I have met a lot of help on the internet forums but I think this is one of the top encounters....THANK YOU BOB!

See you all in the days to come. :macx:

We are not all that way up, a bit south of Glasgow, but our 26S is now in Troon, overlooking Arran. This part of Scotland certainly has become one of my favourite places in the world, too. :) :)
