recover cushions

Post by amnesia »

I need to recover the cushions inside my 2000 26x. I think I recall this discussed awhile back. I did a search but for some reason could not find the info I need. Does anyone know how much material is required to redo all of the cushions except the v and rear berth? I cannot reach my boat for at least 3 weeks and the local fabric store has a 40% off sale for 1 week. I have my eye on some nice "moleskin" fabric that is soft yet looks durable. It is expensive for my pocket, so I would like to take advantage of the sale. How much do I need to buy? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I do not post much - but I read the forums every day. Sure tend to learn alot on this forum and everyone seems so civil and polite. Pleasant alternative to the forums I often deal with at work!

Just had our 01 X interior recovered. Nine yds for the 7 regular interior cushions. Eight yds for the 2 V-berth. Didn't do the rear cushions as we removed them and carpeted the area. Includes 3 " foam for all cushions except backrest cushions. Lucked out on a good price on the fabric. Saw lots of it for $25 to $55 at other places so we were pleased to get fabric at a great price. Includes new vinyl but don't see a cost on my bill so I guess it's included somewhere.

Foam - $148, 17 yds - $126, Labor - $190. Total - $464 plus tax.

For people in the west it was done at "Jackson's Fabric Corner - 1331 Cuyamaca St. #A - El Cajon, CA (San Diego area) 619 258-7424

Good sailing, Murv

I would love to get rid of the ungodly material in my 2004M. It gets cold and clamy. I would much rather have fabric, like the X boats.

My executive officer & I redid ours recently since the ones in the boat I just got reeked and looked like Brady Bunch couch fabric.
We used sunbrella we bought on sale. I learned how to rip seams.. yee haaa! Now that's fun!

Anyway, we just unseamed the vinyl panel and the zipper panel, we used the vinyl panel as a pattern for the new fabric and my wife reused the zipper panel to save time. Took about a weekend of spare time for the dinette & settee, the v and aft berth took longer due to their size.

The sunbrella sews pretty easily, she used a denim needle I think.
We also wrapped the new foam with thin stuff, I think it;s called interfacing, to help it slip into the covers.

Thanks ... nice step-by-step description. Kinda begs the question though, of exactly who was acting Exec and who was acting Cap't on that detail :!:
:D

What type of foam are you using when upgrading the cushions? I find the factory foam does not provide much support and seems to go flat overnight. There is a closed cell foam available but the cost may make it prohibitive.

Would be great to find something like that "Tempurpedic" stuff... heavy product, but offers good support... doubt they sell it in bulk to cut to shape, though.

I bought a Queen size memory foam topper thing and cut it to the shape of the V berth. It's thin which helps it roll up small and out of the way, but helps a lot when sleeping.

You could always try a visco elastic memory form mattress topper and cut to size. Costco has them. Seehere. I have one that I am planning on cutting up and putting in the boat.
