The problem with heating with electricity is not its lack of efficiency, it’s actually 100% efficient. Meaning that 100% of the electric energy you put into a heater is converted into heat. A light bulb in a house is also considered to be a 100% efficient at heating the area around it because 100% of the power that goes to it becomes heat. (Comparatively little actually goes to making light).

Other heating methods (LPG, natural gas, as examples) are far less efficient, meaning that maybe 70% of the energy (in the example of a pot on a stove) goes into heating the pot, and the combustion products are necessarily vented away as exhaust or lost. (Some gas home appliances can go over 90%).

It’s cheaper to use methods of heating other than electricity because those methods are simply less costly, even when you factor in that they are less efficient than electricity.

In the case of heating water (on a boat or anywhere) the really big hurdle you are up against is physics. It takes more energy to heat water up than any other substance. Multiple times more energy in some cases. Just as an example, it takes about half as much energy to heat up an alcoholic beverage as it does to heat up the same amount of water.

Unless by lack of efficiency in electricity you’re meaning that it’s not efficient at producing heat from your dollar!

All this talk about heat - now I have to go and put another log on the fire here – the snow’s starting to pile up outside.

Not to everyone taste ... I love a good brewed coffee, I love maple syrup on pancakes, I love bacon and soft yoke eggs for breakfast, combined into a lollipop ... no thank you.

The first "odd item" for me is canned evaporated milk, for my cereal in the morning. Evaporated milk has twice the protein of whole milk - yes, twice the fat and carbohydrates, too, but a robust breakfast with a decent share of protein is important to me; but sun-up is just too early for me to actually start cooking. I'm doing well enough to boil up a kettle of water for my yerba maté (think of it as "Gaucho tea").

Lunch and supper are more of a challenge, to someone who is very lazy about cooking at home. Fridge-to-microwave is impractical even on a larger yacht; it could be done on a Mac 26, sort of, but I'm not willing to go that far! Plus, I have this dream about "sailing beyond the sunset" someday; and I figure I'd serve that dream best if I learn to prepare my meals onboard without relying on refrigerated anything. So that means dry carbohydrates (rice, pasta, "pilot biscuits," etc.), canned meats (tuna, chicken, corned beef, Spam); but chiefly, things that won't spoil during a long passage.
