Mac 26 in LA?
Mac 26 in LA?
We are just learning to sail and considering a Mac 26 as our first boat.
I love the idea of being able to trailer the boat around to different sailing destinations. We're currently sailing a '64 Bahama Islander we share with the owner out of Marina Del Rey and I find myself wanting to be able to wander more.
Would love to crew for a local Mac skipper (D, S, C, X, or M) in LA to see how the boat fits our needs.

No problem Brad. Pull some strings and fix the weather and you are more than welcome to tag along to San Diego for the week after Christmas. Bring your fishing license and Lobster Report Card. A bottle of good Scotch (Johnie Walker or better) will take care of your keep.
All kidding aside, I hope I gave you an idea of what the Mac is good for here in the local area. San Diego is very protected and a touch warmer than up here in the Winter. Lake Meade is only about a six hour drive. If you were single I would recommend Lake Havasu for Spring Break. Unfortunately even in sunny SoCal the weather keeps us in port occasionally (or in my case - in driveway).
Stay in touch, I often need extra crew and would definitely give a prospective Mac owner a test sail.

OK Brad,
What does your schedule look like Thurs. through Sunday? Thursday could be alot of fun if you like Mr. Toads Wild Ride! PM me. I am still playing the weather by ear. Checking my battery of weather sites every couple of hours.

Mr Toad's Wild Ride indeed!!
NOAA is forecaststing Gale Force winds and seas of 7-9 feet on Thursday! I'd stay in port. Please stay safe. Saturday or Sunday may be better, if you don't mind getting a little wet.

Re: Mac 26 in LA?
Not to worry, I have been keeping my eye on this coming storm and its aftermath on Thursday. Unfortunately you are correct. Initially they were calling for it to arrive a bit earlier and then clear out earlier. I kinda have this week off and was hoping to get some boating in but it looks like it might only be from Friday to Sunday. The storm for this weekend looks pretty wimpy so far but as usual I am keeping an eye on it.
Couple of useful sites you might not normally think of but hugely informative about our local waters.
WetSand-surf site with a pretty good summary of conditions.
http://forecasts.swellwatch.com/#place= ... one_Sat_-1
SurfLine-the original surf report. Now they want you to cough up an annual membership. Still they have all the best cams. Pioneered it.
http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/bol ... rnia_4868/
Windfinder-now this is a cool one I just found.
http://www.windfinder.com/weatherforeca ... long_beach
Then of course there are the biggies; weather underground, Accuweather, and of course NOAA which is who you get on your weather VHF.
Cross your fingers Wednesdays storm is the last for a while. Well at least a week. Long enough for me to get in a sail and for the swamp in my back yard to drain.

Re: Mac 26 in LA?
It's pretty amazing living in snow when you are ready for it. We got 15 inches in the last storm, but my cul-de-sac was plowed by 6am....and roads were clear and wet only.
Re: Mac 26 in LA?
Just checked back in here after moping around for the last two weeks about all the small craft advisories and gale warnings. Had the entire time off and managed to get the Islander out for one afternoon and stayed inside the breakwater with a reefed main at MDR due to the high winds and seas.
I'll have to check out the extra wx sites.
Theo - Appreciate the offer. I'll PM you to see if we can get hooked up some good weather weekend.

Re: Mac 26 in LA?
Just to let you all know, discretion got the better part of valor and I stayed home, or at least off the water, the last few days. I would have gone but I couldn't find anybody as psycho as I am to go with me. I seem to be the most unballasted person around.
For a fun little read, the following link is from a, literally unballasted, guy that did go out the day before. Quite the adventure! Beware, it is from a fishing site I frequent. ( fair amount of BS and "salty" language)

Re: Mac 26 in LA?
Hey Guys
This weekend is a three dayer, MLK day on Monday. So far the long range reports are giving us nice weather and fairly calm conditions. Always need to be on the lookout for large surf events here.
So far my plan is to launch on Sat in the LB area and sail down to Zooport. I plan to dangle on a mooring for a few nights, $5 per night. Then sail her back up Monday and put her away again. I will probable spend at least one night aboard, but Zooport is pretty accessible and there are plenty of courtesy docks to drop off or pick up passengers. I plan on doing some fishing and lobster hooping, so if you want to play along you will need a Peoples Republic of California fishing license and lobster report card. (around $23.00 min)
Anybody wanna buddy boat with me? If anyone wants to tag along for just a day or two that would work, but you probably would have to arrange your own pick up or drop offs in Zooport. Any SoCal Macers getting cabin fever?

Rick,
I may be wrong, but I translate "Zooport" to mean San Diego; (EX: San Diego Zoo).
I'd love to go.
