Magma Cabo Grill

It's back at West Marine for $99. Two questions:

1) Does anyone use this (I think there is something up with the search).
2) Where do folks mount their grills? Given that I keep mine in the marina, I am think maybe hanging it off the mast arch.

I had to go look... I have the Kettle which is now $219 I paid 5 years ago $99 .. It has a swivel I too slip my boat I hang the swivel and kettle off the Port Side stantion post closest to the Companionway.. Just a thought but IMHO...and looking at it ...there is a good reason why the kettle went up double and the Boot Box came down to half.. ......I stand or sit on the finger pier between boats and cook ... Much easier.. I have used mine On the hook and do prefer to stand on a dock to cook..

I was looking at both of these Saturday when I was in West Marine. The kettle does seem better built...but I would be interested in hearing a few more peoples experiences.

My Magma is rail mounted from the aft port stauntion - permanently, including on the road. Brilliant rail mount setup on the Magmas,

I have the standard size cover on my party size kettle, bit of a squeeze but it does fit, and stops the top of the kettle from coming off in the rough stuff

I have the Magma Kettle. We use a standard fishing-rod-holder mounted to the port-side handrail, and that works well for the purpose (need to get the rod-holder adapter for the grill for this to work). The kettle is a nice unit and can be used for both grilling as well as an oven or cooktop. The only issue we've had is that when grilling greasy foods the grease can overflow the bottom tray and end up on the boat... so you want to be sure you have it overhanging the water sufficiently to prevent that from occurring, and don't grill in rough seas.

The Cabo is a rather large grill, so I'm not sure where you'd want to install that... I think perhaps the same location as mine may work, or perhaps use the aft rails, on the sides. But to keep the grill away from the boat, with such a large grill, you'll probably want the "T10-780 Rectangular" mount.

I ended up buying the Kettle 2 (original size) at West Marine. They matched Defender's price of $199. It's pretty simple, nearly every sailor that I talked to had the Kettle grill and loved it. I ran into the the "Orion's" Admiral at West Marine that were staying over at Caladesi and she ended up being the final word!

Cooked some Hebrew National Jumbo all beef franks on it and I must say they were absolutely delicious.

The Cabo grill states it should not be used on a boat with the legs. So that model requires some kind of mount to use onboard.
Same for the kettle. We have the kettle and love it. Nothing like being at anchor (or even sailing) and grilling up some tasty food.


I bought mine at Spinnaker Jim's because they had the best prices. Maybe West would price match them. They also have ALL the fun accessories like the cover that matches my sail cover and bimini and of course all the mounts.

The admiral and I both agree the Magma grill was the best addition we made to the boat.

Love the Kettle. We do all our cooking outside. it's mounted on the rear mast support with a stantion mount. West Marine matched a cheaper Amazon price so if you can show them online they will probably match the price+shipping.

Stopped in at West Marine today to pick up some winterizing supplies and walked out with a magma kettle grill! Just what I need to keep the boat warm! I plan to mount it on the rear port stanchion.

Everytime I read the posts here it costs me money.

I have one of the round Magma grills with the legs and have used it on board, despite the instructions to the contrary. PLacIng it on a towel stops it from sliding around.

Make suretyou buy one with a spark ignitor, it isn't good to be fooling with lit matches back there with all that gas.

...and cooking bacon on a grill makes a spectacular fire and lots of carbon...

I replace my "legged" grill with the magma because I didn't feel safe with it on deck. I had a block of wood under it and all but still felt it could fall the second I left it unattended. The permanent rail mount is awesome. Also stores it out of the way ready to use.

The sparker thingy would probably be nice, although most grills I've had got gummed up and stopped working. We use one of those long bic bbq lighters. So far it's worked well but a built in sparker would be more convienient.

Bacon? We use the precooked stuff. Works great without the fun flames though. Goes good with biscuits on the grill for breakfast.

I bought my charcoal kettle grill over 20 years ago , for a $100.00 , and have used it on 5 boats .
A few years ago , we bought new grills , knob , and a cover for it.

We have spent nearly every weekend on board our boats from early spring to winter , and have cooked dinners nearly every weekend on this same grill . From that you can imagine how many times , I have fired this grill up.

The grill is in great shape , and we have currently mounted her on our on the starboard stern rail. This grill has been mounted on just about every mount Magma makes .

I can't think of any other boat product that has held up as well as this Magma Charcoal Kettle Grill has !

I had a charcoal grill on my old boat. It was always fun to watch folks look at it when we lit it (smoke and fire). I'm sure a few thought the boat was on fire.

Yup, charcoal rules, but now we have submitted to the convenience of propane. Plus, I haven't learned how to make breakfast biscuits on the charcoal.
At home, we use the charcoal most often.

I am not sure how to do it , but biscuits can be baked on charcoal , by using a small cast iron dutch oven. A friend of mine does it all the time.

It is amazing to me that the grill , after all these years hasn't burned thru in the bottom.
If ever it does , I am buying one just like it , assuming they are still making it.
Right now , the charcoal grill has to be specialed oredered.
