Butane Stove or Coleman Camping stove?

I was looking that the $40 Butane in a little black box (Kenyon I believe).

It makes me wonder whether I should get a Coleman stove that would use the same butane bottles as a Magma grill? I would think it would be a much better stove especially for cooking breakfast on a big ole griddle!

Anyone use a Coleman and like it? It would take more space for sure down below and my only real concern is that it may not do well in a marine environment.

I have a S.S. Coleman 2 burner Camp stove.. I am thinking about switching it , to a nicer single burner that would fit better in the cabin..
I .... dont eat much for Breakfast and for dinner I grill mostly and a single burner would fine for rice or beans or pasta...IMHO it would ( single burner) fit easy and store easier. I have to set the 2 burner in the cockpit and cook from the cabin even for just my required ...pot of coffee in the morning... But thats just me . There is a Very Clever attachment MOD in the Galley Mods ...

If you are using it above deck no problem but IMHO gas and confined spaces plus sparks are not compatible, we have a little butane cooker but it is just for emergencies "if" the metho stove plays up and then it would be used above deck, in the dinghy or out on the ground.

I had/have on of those black butane stoves. Works great and now it's at home as an extra burner. My boat came with a butane stove in the galley. Maybe it's my imagination but that butane stove boils water FAST.

Just keep the bottles safe and you will be fine. Our magma uses the 1lb propane bottles. I keep 'em both outside.

We use a Coleman 2 burner stove on Y.B. Normal. When we overnight, we're usually in a harbor and use the stove on the seawall. I use a portable table with extended legs to raise the stove to a comfortable working height. We have used the stove in the cockpit with good results. I haven't used it in the cabin only because I don't want the cooking oils coating the cabin liner. When not in use, I keep the 1 lb. bottles in the cockpit next to the fuel tanks.

How about something like the Brinkmann SS stove..I'll try find a link.

Ive used one for about5 years now.

Propone, so all bottles are stored above decks and use is supervised. We never leave the stiff connected and unattended when done cooking, it gets put away.

jschrade- you might like the Coleman Two Burner Fold-N-Go for its size, fits well next to my Fagor nesting cookware in the galley "cabinet" and holds two 12" pots/pans.

Butane has about 10% more fuel content per unit mass than propane...btw, so you might see a small difference in cooking times. Stove construction and shielding could easily swamp the difference in cook times though.

Actually I guess I have a Brinkman.... ( Cats Links) But similar to the Coleman. IMHO its , a bit large for in the Cabin and a bit cumbersome for the sink top and a bit large for easy storage.
As others have said and NO DOUBT a Must!! Store the tanks Top side and in fact make your connection of the tank , top sides and bring the tank and regulator downstairs when your ready.
I have BTW a 12 gallon gas tank on the Starboard side and a 6 gallon tank on the Port side.. That allows me to have a cheezzzy Plastic Milk Crate on the Port side as well. That's where I store the 6 Tanks I use for both , the Stove and the BBQ and where I store a few other things. I have 3 pieces of 4" PVC attached in 3 corners of that Deluxe Plastic Cheeezzy Milk Crate and it allows me to store 6 Fatty Tanks and as I said, some other odds and ends under the port seat.I can find fatty tanks for about $2 , and one will fill my needs, for cooking / living on board, for numerous days. I think... I could cook a Turkey in the amount of time it seems to take.... to Perk a 10 Cup Pot of coffee.... Or Maybe... I am just impatient so early in the morning..

We bought the one above at Walmart for about $30 and like it. It was picked for its size. Of course the first one screwed up about the 2nd day of use and I had to mess with the regulator to get it working. We took it back and exchanged it for another one which has worked day after day for us with no problems.

It stores quickly .....

We kept the bottles out in the laz in sealed containers, but the other day I added these .....



...tubes and can keep 4 bottles total in them. They aren't too pretty, but will have to do until I can come up with something else.

We use the stove in the cabin, but slide the top hatch back and keep good ventilation and I've added a CO detector that also shows accumulative amounts. On the gas thing, I have a bad nose, but just put a little propane in the air and I'll smell that. We won't have them in the cabin at night, but for meals see no problems and we try to be very careful cooking below, but people cook below on thousands of boats. We looked at alcohol stoves, but they have their drawbacks also and finding the alcohol to use for us was a bigger problem than propane bottles that are in any town and easy to find.

I have the one Summer shows in his reply, inexpensive Coleman. Cant beat the price and works great and stows under the galley (with Propane bottle removed). HOWEVER for $30 more dollars I would have opted for the SS Coleman, that Catigale referred to, if I would have seen it first

We use a Stainless Steel single burner with Butane (like keyon) for the Galley than use a Skillet with Propane for other cooking (Sausage,Bacon,home fries,eggs. Than stir fry veggies and meat strips all on the flat skillet, 12"x24"). Skillet we use the most as we cook most of our meals on it and if anything else we use the Butane stove. We also have a portable Propane grill we cook in cockpit for those flare up juicy steaks.
Make sure you cook down wind of other Cruisers unless you want company.
Butane and propane is heavier than air so use wisely and store tanks in cockpit.

I vote for alcohol
