USA purchase

Post by bundie »

I am heading to the USA shortly, California specifically, and want to look at a used MacGregor 26M with the idea of importing for my own use. I will be staying near the factory so will be giving them a visit.
Any ideas on what is the best way to find any for sale? Dealers, agents etc. I have done the "usual" and web surfed etc. I have researched the processes of the actual freighting/AQIS/Customs (thanks Glenn).
Now just have to find the right vessel at the right price!

Cheers

Bundie, have you looked at this forum's Classified section? There are quite a few listed there for sale.

There are also several previous threads on shipping here in the forum.. might want to use the "Search..." box on the upper right of this page.

Good luck with your hunt!

I head out on Saturday for the USA. I will be about 20 minutes from the Mac factory for a week or so, then moving around, and will drop in to say "hi" and have a look around the factory. With the $A now close to the same as $USA I can have a good look around. Not located a boat as yet on the "net", but I have time to look in person.
Here's hoping on finding good boat :)

Good Luck and keep us posted on your 'search'. Many people are interested in doing the same thing.

We found 'Imagine' formally known as 'Jenny' in the forums classified section, were very happy with her.

Good hunting Michael.

Back from the US of A. Had a great holiday and sons wedding. Did not purchase a Mac, as I did not find a suitable one.
Having said that, the primary purpose of the trip was not boat hunting.
Did go to the MacGregor factory as it was 5 minutes drive from son's home. Had a tour through, and especially liked the "old" hand layup way of building. Better than the "spray" way I believe. A production line of vessels were there, with many awaiting delivery outside; some destined for Aust.
When I mentioned that I was looking at a second hand private import there was a cooling of interest. Even the idea of buying a "stock" one from the factory and having them export it to me was not looked at as a good idea. Apparenlty I would not have any warrenty coverage in Aust if I privately imported a new vessel! Do not get me wrong, I can understand their wanting to sell a new vessel, and protect their dealers here, but there is a big price differance ex-factory to Aust dealer. I did not get an answer on who would be best to ship a private vessel. I was hoping to get information on the company they use, but it was not forthcoming. I would have liked to drop off a vessel at the factory and "slot it in" with their new ones going to Aust. I was prepared to pay for their time but I did not suggest this idea as I had the feeling it would have not gone down well!!
I will have to keep looking via the internet, and my son is keeping his eyes open for me. I am looking more to the RORO method of transport. The "ballpark" quotes I have for both container and RORO are acceptably close; and I think the lack of diss/reassembly needs factoring in.
Cheers
