Still trying to figure out my engine issues. Cleaned and synched the carbs, cleaned fuel lines and pump, replaced plugs. While out today, the wake seemed a little more "aerated" than normal. Slowed down, thought to check exhaust. Hot air coming from exhaust port. Advanced throttle just above idle and... hmm... bubbling comming from the joint between lower unit and powerhead. As far as I know, and can tell from the diagrams the BF50 does not exhaust through propeller, only through port.
So, does it make sense that the exhaust could be causing issues? I'm thinking the exhaust is causing cavitation and slipping and thus slowing the boat.
Anyone seen anything like this?

Re: Honda 50 exhaust
I dont think that kind of cavitation is likely your problem Terry.
The exhaust on a lot of outboards comes down the powerhead and out the final drive - if you a gasket loose you will get some bubbles in this case. Are you sure the Honda doesnt exhaust out the prop shaft by design? I thought just about every outboard in the 50 HP range does this.

Re: Honda 50 exhaust
I just finished tinkering with my Honda BF50A, and if I remember correctly, it does exhaust out through the prop shaft as well as through the back vent.
Cleaned and synced the carbs? Yikes. There are three carburators. If even 1 carb has a flooded float bowl, or a jet nozzle not set properly, it could cause problems.

Re: Honda 50 exhaust
Looks like that's correct, but mine seems to be leaking from the joint at the lower unit. Perhaps I didn't get it back on correctly after replacing the water pump impeller.
