I believe Sergeants need to be responsible for their Soldier's actions so I would take out some fellow SFC/E-7 that I all out rank first, followed by some SSG/E-6 I really don't deal with anything lower these days. Lower enlisted are trainable and Sergeants become trainable when you make an example out of one.

Sometimes it really is a Pain in the Butt being a Certified Structual Inspector, gets in the way between pleasure and work.
Go take it out on the other side cavitation plate to make it a two blade prop.

My water impeller needed to be changed out and I did this in the process of having a heated discussion with my wife about 5000 USD of taxes we had to pay in after I had been gone for 7 1/2 years out of 9 on every crap hole on the planet.I forgot to take out that one hidden bolt under that plastic screen to take off the lower unit. Well I thought it was stuck and just got a BFH and a block of wood and hit it. I soon realized to late what I missed and acquired a $75 aluminum welding bill. Thank you Dave for noticing I was getting sleepy until you reminded me of that incident now I am ready to kill again for my country.

Dave - thanks for your post on this btw. I never knew that fishing line could shear a blade..Ive never had that happen, but perhaps it wont be a shock the first time it does....

Re: Defect or Hit Something or Trend?
This is how it works. You manage to hook on a monofilient line on one blade, you start the engine and put it in forward, it quckly wraps the hub were there is a indent of around 1/16-1/8 grove and it wraps that, this happens in under 1 second. After a few revolutions you know have many wraps that increase line strength and either engine will shut down or it will snap the Aluminum blade. Wire leader or 50 lb monofiliment leader will snap it quicker and probably well before the motor shuts down. Even if it didn't wrap the indent it still most likely will snap the blade off. Best solution is to have the prop. shaped to a cutting edge at the hub but just 1/2 inch out from the Hub.

Re: Defect or Hit Something or Trend?
Alright Dave I am not going to raise the BS Flag on your fishing line theory because I have personally brought in a 7ft sandtiger shark on 50lb test so I know fishing line is stronger than most people think. However on the pics below is a Michigan Wheel 3 blade 11 3/4 X 10 propeller and I will tell you it has seen more abuse than a Korean Juicy Girl on a Military Pay Day. I have had an entire crab trap wrapped around it to badly it stopped the engine from running, I have 50lb braided line wrapped around it so much that I had to take off the propeller to get half of my line that was on my reel back, and recently 3 months ago I ran over a chain from a stuck anchor which is the damage you see on it in the pictures below. So what am I saying here is this if that 4 blade Solas propeller broke from fishing line or I determine if the new one can and will break from something so sissy as that I will get this old 3 blade propeller repaired again and put back on my boat because NO WUSSY PROPELLERS OR ANYTHING ELSE WUSSY ALOUD ON MY BOAT, and I know fishing line doesn't break that one! So if you ever want to know what will stand up to punishment on your boat you can either spent a lot of money and time researching magazines, internet, and traveling to numerous marine stores, or you can just ask me. If I can't give you and answer then it is because I have no need for it, don't have the money yet to try it, or it is something so wussy and gay I would never ever even thought about using it.

[quote="ROAD Soldier"]Alright Dave I am not going to raise the BS Flag on your fishing line theory .
It's not a theory..It is a fact as it happened to me and broke off at same point. I said wraped around one blade!
If line is Available to wrap it will only increase in strength until some thing Pops or shuts down. Pictures you show have markings on all 3 blades were a single wrap would not.
When one starts a engine or even anchored fishing the propella can rotate if in neautral due to current and wind and doing so could wrap the propella with line and when you go forward causes the sheer force.
Example: A 1/4 tapcon screw holding a Hurricane strap in block concrete may have a pull out of est. 1200 lbs but a side sheer pull will fail at est. 200 lbs. Same as your prop. blades in theory.
There is many ways to cause your prop. to break off and all I am doing is pointing out a few probable causes as you asked at beginning of post.

Re: Defect or Hit Something or Trend?
Can someone please explain the physics of being able to only wrap around one blade of a moving propeller. I just cant visualize that unless its in a fishes mouth and its circling a stationary propeller blade.

Re: Defect or Hit Something or Trend?
Wrecked my prop today was checking out a park across the river, I started to think this is a bit shallow and not sandy as i thought when wack and motor stalled, Bugger.
Started her back up and drove slowly out into clear water so i could bring her up and straighten up/ break off the nasty bits and headed back across the river slowly due vibrations as expected. apart from that had a pretty nice day out with the kids.
