This is a question about the marine tex 2 oz putty. I just wondered if the white color was a really close match to the hull of the 2006 26M. Also if it matches the topside area like the seat where the stanchion rubs. I would be awful at matching colors and would buy the gelcoat from BYW if there is a real difference in the colors. Thanks in advance.

Re: marine-tex white color match
MarineTex white is a reasonable match for MacGregor white but it does tend to grey a bit with age. If you want a perfect match go for the factory gel coat available at BWY. If the damage requires fiberglass support you can use MarineTex for the major work and top off with gel coat.

Re: marine-tex white color match
I use Marine tex often were I need more solid and friction resistant such as rudder hitting brackets and centerboard. You cannot Polyester Gel coat over epoxy as it doesn't bond well. I have done it a few times in very small areas but used 80 grit sandpaper and cleaned well with Lacor thinner or Acetone.
The basic white Marine Tex is very close to the gel coat but my boat is a 1997 and faded even tho I keep it polished. Use just a tip of a needle for a tiny drop of brown for a 1/2 pint of white gel coat and should be very close, after a few mo. it will blend in if you are close enough in color, test a spot first.

Re: marine-tex white color match
As usual the responses from the Mac folks are a great help.
Based on Duane's comment about the white turning grey after some time and Dave's comment explaining that epoxy doesn't adhere well to polyester resin I went with the white gel coat paste that they offer at BYW.

Gary,
Epoxy adhears to Polyester Resin or gelcoat very well. It's Epoxy that doesn't adhear to Gelcoat or Poliyester resin well. Duane is correct about Epoxy Marine Tex turning a grayish color as it is not ment for a final finish and doesn't have UV protection.
