Fitting a Bruce Claw anchor to a 26X bow plate
I am in the process of fitting our 5Kg claw anchor to the bow anchor plate on our 2000 26X and have a question.
I have drilled a hole in the side of the anchor so that the bow pin can be passed through it to lock the anchor in place. Also I have removed a U shaped piece from the front of the anchor box lid at the front of the lid so that the anchor chain can run into the anchor box and the lid be closed. So far so good.
However, I would like some way to secure the anchor chain inside the box and was thinking about fitting a cleat. I'm not looking for something strong enough to tie off the anchor chain when at anchor, more something to just keep the chain tight. I will use the 2 normal bow cleats when at anchor.
Anyone fitted a cleat or similar system inside the anchor box? Judging by the dimensions there is a large amount of foam between the outer box skin and the inside of the boat but anyone know how thick the skin is in the anchor box?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary - I thought about this to prevent loss of the bitter end of the rode, but was never comfortable about digging into the box on my
I ended up marking the bitter end with bright red tape and tieing it off onto the pulpit.

Re: Fitting a Bruce Claw anchor to a 26X bow plate
Hey guys,
I have similar issue wth my 2000X. I have always wanted some sort of anchor roller but with all the foam and the liner there is just no good access to the bow to install a roller and reposition the bow lights. Recently though I saw a mod on Sumner's site where he uses a section of 3" PVC pipe clamped to the stanchion as an "Anchor Tube". It is totally non-permanent and easy to make, I likey. Then I made a hole in in the anchor locker cover for the rode. Done!
I keep the rope section of my anchor rode on a homemade "cord keeper" thingy I made from 1/2" pvc pipe. The nice thing about that is you can run the line through the pipe and pre-attach it to your anchor cleats.

How about using one of these....

....you hook a line to that and hook it on the chain and then run the line to a cleat either in the locker or on the deck and pull back and cleat the line off. It will hold the anchor back on the roller and also keep the chain taught,

Hey Sumner,
Just so you know, I totally ripped off your idea with the anchor tubes. Right down to the black color, white might have been better, and the three hose clamps. It was a very elegant solution to a persnickety problem. Thanks. If you are ever in the area, swing by for a beer.

Thanks, but I stole the idea from someone else. I hear "blue tubes" makes the anchor go down fasterTheo wrote:Hey Sumner,

We were there about a month ago. Ruth worked for Boeing for 35 years and has a grown son in Anaheim and a daughter out in Yucca Valley. We will probably be back next spring so keep the beer cold,

Theo - there is room on an
to put the roller on with just a couple of holes in the bow, no removal of liner required

Re: Fitting a Bruce Claw anchor to a 26X bow plate
Our X has had a roller plate fitted by one of the previous owners. It is attached with 3 large bolts that go through the top deck of the bow and are bolted down from the underside of the very front of the V berth. If you lie on your back on the V berth and go as far as you can forward, you will just see a small triangle of exposed deck from the underside. You can also see the forward sets of cleat bolts. Very very claustrophobic up there though!

Re: Fitting a Bruce Claw anchor to a 26X bow plate
Hey Guys,
Sumner, I will keep a beer on ice for you. I am not too far from the Boeing ex Douglas facilities here in HB. I also used to drive by the Boeing Douglas facilities in Lakewood/Long Beach.
Steve and Gary,
Where is your little bi-colour running bow light. Mine is right where your anchor rollers are. That is my biggest concern. I have noticed the light is mounted to the bow pulpit on many Macs, especially all the Ms I have seen. I know how tight it is in the bow. I don't know if I can get my head in there to re-wire the light. Besides that is where the kids feet go when we stay on the boat. Eewww!
I am good with my system for now. I will see how it works and let you know.

Ours is mounted on the side of the bow plate. As I write this, I am wondering if if the anchor will blank out the light. I will hopefully get to the boat later today and if I can I will take some pictures.Theo wrote:Where is your little bi-colour running bow light.
I suppose that child friendly spot will be used up but there is still plenty of space to sit near the pulpit.Theo wrote:Besides that is where the kids feet go when we stay on the boat. Eewww!

Theo - the bow light got moved up to the pulpit in 2002, so that opened up the space for the roller - rewiring it is a bit of a pig (the factory actually managed to run the wire up the inside of the pulpit - that would be tough to do after the fact.

Yeah guys and I am a lot lazier than you are. Take my word for it.
Gary,
The kids sleep with their icky, sandy, muddy, smelly, little baby feet in the V-Berth. Thar be monters there!

I would make sure that your light is clearly visible and unobscured. I do some boating here in LA/Long Beach harbor at night and coming across boats with obscured lights is nerve wracking at best.
