I downloaded a free app called "My Tracks" from Google on my Android cell phone (maybe available for iphone not sure)...It seems like it would be a great tool while sailing.... if you are a numbers geek. Just beware it does eat your battery life up slightly quicker while tracking ...you may want to keep it pluged into a recepticle and review logs at the end of day
I have not used all the features yet but it provides a lot of data to record those spectacular sailing days...you can print your track from a satellite view and make your own"Cruising Log" ....................... Matt
While recording tracks, you can:
1.See location / progress on a map - NO NAUTICAL CHARTS YET
2.Monitor real-time statistics: time, distance, speed, average speed, elevation, moving time, lat & long, average moving speed
3.View elevation profile by time or distance
4.Zoom, pan elevation profile
5.Create waypoints
6.Create statistics waypoints (splits tracks into subtracks)
7.Also does graphing of speed to distance to elevation
To share tracks, you can:
1.Upload to Google Map
2.Upload to Google Docs
3.Email as a Google My Map link
4.Embed Google Map on a website
5.Email as .gpx or .kml attachments
6.Export as .gpx or .kml to phone SD card
7.Tweet your My Map link on Twitter using Twidroid

Re: Cell Phone App for Android smartphone - Nice Tool
Now if Motorola would just get their butt in gear and push the Android 2.1 update down to my Cliq XT (currently stuck at 1.5). They have said 2Q for the update, time is almost up.
As soon as that happens I'll have the Navionics software on my phone as well. $13 bucks is a steal of a deal. The same Navionics chart region on an SD card for my chartplotter cost $199. The app and set of charts for my iPod was only $9.99 however. The iPod chart set is the exact same charts as the ones in the chartplotter right down to the same live tides and currents info. Having it in my phone with it's GPS would be even better.
