Raymarine S1 Autopilot

I set out on my first trip away from my mooring this year last Friday. Once clear of the marina I went to engage the autopilot and nothing happened. After a few attempts I gave up trying. Upon arrival at my destination I pulled out the manual. The first alongside trial listed is to go from standby to Auto, then press +10 and cofirm that the rudder turns in response to the command. I had engaged the wheel and it was trying to turn the rudder but nothing happened. Nothing is preventing the rudders from turning. Has anyone any suggestions on what may be the problem?

Are you saying when you press +10 the S1 motor turns the wheel but the rudders don't move?

If this is the case you have issues with the steering linkage or steering cable. Doesn't sound like an S1 issue.

But if the S1 motor is not turning the wheel then you have a S1 issue. Can you give us a little more info on what happens with the S1 motor and the steering wheel?

Check all your wires connected to the S1 Computer. Those could easily become disconnected during trailering or even while on the water. I assume you have checked the power conection to the motor drive up on your pedastal.

Does this AP have a belt??

The wheel pilot has a toothed belt inside the wheel hub (i am not sure if they all do)

I have a Raymarine st6002 autopilot. I was in the prosess of installing the wheel part when I had to take the regular crome wheel off and I used a puller to do it. Somehow I had pressure against the raymarine wheel part and it separated. It didn't break anything but I remember it has 26-27 ball bearings. They went everywhere. There is also an adjustment (screw on an oblong circle to adjust the tension of the belt.) You can see the screw adjustment without going through what I did. By your discription it may well be that adjustment.

Call the folks at raymarine, they are fantastic at helping.

After spending an enjoyable, albeit wet, weekend at a nearby marina. After being uinderway for about a half hour I decided to try the autopilot again. You guessed it! It worked and worked a treat the remainder of my three hour trip home. The only thing I think I did differently was to engage the clutch BEFORE switching from STANDBY to AUTO. Is this significant?

i only got a small battery, and sailed fore 6 houers, whitout any problems. But if you are turning meny times, it vill wear down.

But if i remember it right, it wil not drain the battery totaly, it wil stop at xx volt.

Guess I better start saving my pennies for one of those APs. I've never sailed on my own, but it's getting hard to find crew exactly when the skipper is able to go AND the weather is cooperating.
