I feel like you should post the name of this alleged mechanic. This way you might save other Etec owners from his ineptness. I had a similar problem where the mechanic told me he checked everything all day. His bill was 2000 dollars Since I only had 10 hrs.on the motor Bombardier agreed to give me free fuel injectors that the mechanic said are about 1000 dollars each.

From this I can only presume you were not using an authorised mechanic or your motor was bought and installed by an unauthorised mechanic as otherwise everything should have been covered by BRP, this is one of the problems we can get over here where a S/H boat is sourced fro the US or elsewhere and the local companies won't honour warranty and this applies to all gear including Macgregor.
I did notice on the Etec owners site Huey who is based in Sydney did not want to discuss an Aust motor until I gave him the numbers.
