Trailer Tire for 2005 Trailer

My apologies if this is a repeat question. I did a search but could not find an answer for a 2005 trailer (lots of info from all you 26X owners with 14 inch tires).

I am trying to buy a spare tire. I have 225/75D15 tires. My Goodyear guy is asking if I need a 5 x 5 or 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern.

I have a "standard" trailer. I do not have access to my trailer at this time so I can't go measure the distance.

Any help would be appreciated.

All wheels on Roger's trailers are 5-lugs on a 4.5" lug circle (diam), both the 14" and 15" wheels. That's frequently coded as a 545 wheel, pretty much a trailering standard. also used on many small Fords. The next upsize is 15" with 6 lugs - a different animal with higher capacity rating than needed for the Mac.
Roger's not known for upsizing beyond 'adequate.'

Kind of on-topic, I am looking to replace the 14" tires on my trailer prior to my run to Florida in the spring. I'm leaning hard to radials, but there isn't a lot of choice out there in terms of brands. I know many of you have Goodyear Marathons on your trailers - how have they been performing? Any failures? I am really worried given what I've read about them. Is there a better tire? Are the Titan radials any good?

Also, I am on the fence about what size... I hate to modify the fenders and everything unless there's no choice - what's the largest (read: highest load rating) tire that will fit under the standard fenders? 205x14? 225x14? 205x15? 225x15?

I have Goodyear Marathon radial 225x14s on a 5200 lb tandem axle travel trailer that has seen four years of TX sun and 100+ heat, subzero CO winter cold and snow, 12K miles of interstate, forest gravel, offroad sand, high mountain passes, AZ deserts, etc. you name, it's been on it. No problems at all and they show very little wear. I expect another 20K miles before I replace them at 7 years because of age. This is the only good thing I can say about Goodyear tires. Their car and truck tires uniformly stink!

This summer I replaced my 9 yr old X trailer tires because of age with Marathon 215x14s. Even though I have the X in the slip, I carry my fully set up Portabote on it for convenience.

Yes, there are a lot of posts on travel trailer forums about the Goodyear Marathon tires. However, I know a lot of those people are very lax, if not ignorant about proper loading and care for tires. I've seen tandem axle trailers at high speeds on the Intertates with the hitch so high or so low, that most of the trailer's weight was on only one axle. I've seen trailers on the interstate at 70 swaying back and forth on underinflated tires, mismatched sizes, bald and unbalanced, .... etc. etc. I'm sure some of those are the letter writers you see posted on forums. They are blaming the tires instead of themselves.

What was the bolt pattern equilivent to?

My boat is in Florida...I am in the UK. But pretty sure the bolt pattern was what FrankC described above as the 545. I got my wheel/tire from a Goodyear dealership for about $80 back in early 2007.

Had a blow out yesterday on original ST225/75D15. Opportunity to replace with light truck tyres on alloy rims. So far I have found out what you have re stud or bolt pattern for the rims. IE 545.

That's 5 studs with an imaginery circle drawn through the centre of the 5 holes and the circle having a diameter of 114.3mm or 4.5".

I am thinking 14 inch rims and lower profile tyres. So I don't have to reverse so far down the ramp.

The markings on my steel rim are... 15 x 6 JJ DOT JGAW 2600lb 12 20 2007

I really can't advise you any more than what I have already told you. I am just not that smart on tires and wheels. The one I bought is my spare. Still have the originals on my trailer.

But some others will probably chime in and give their thoughts on smaller vs. larger wheels.

Re our blow out yesterday...

Am thinking to keep the steel rims for strength [rather than alloy].
Found a 4 x 4 SUV tyre that is 205/70/15 which is 26" in diameter and slightly thinner. The OEM tyre is 225/75/15 with a diameter of 28"

Pros & cons to change

Dave - you will have to post-process the replies you get, realising that the trailers in the US and AUS are quite different, so advice may/may not apply.

Actually if you look at the dates I got my answers pretty quick...within 2 days. Then Dave re-opened this 3+ year old thread.

But I think that is a good thing. You can frequently find the info you need if you search the old threads. Of course most folks don't seem to mind rehashing old news. Just goes to show there are a bunch of good folks on this board.
