You know better that I would never dream of telling people not to modify ... So. I also have several items from pulpit to rudders that I wish to improve. I would like to modify my rudder pivot plane closer to the cp of the rudders, giving lighter trim, but the existing mounts and brackets do not have the required strength for an extension.
Darren, O Darren, :D
There's little doubt that you could study transom and rudders until my boat's gelcoat is fully salt-permeated and the hull rests on the bottom. With full appreciation for your expertise and thoughtfulness ... :), I have only these remaining observations. By the time I've read your rudder caveats . . .
  • * I could have done the empirical test, broken the brackets, had them repaired and strengthened.
    * And, completely worn-out my mainsail.
    * I already have five-plus years with a 300+ motor on my transom, adding just some aluminum channel.
    * Others have mounted the same motor without any transom reinforcement, evidently without problems.
    * If the transom can handle 140 hp, it'll support my stainless rudder brackets, even with barn doors attached.
    * Murv's already done the rudder mod (my engineer, not guinea pig!) and it works for him in 15 knots, so I'm willing to try it on SF Bay.
    * If I break a rudder, I have a spare.
    * If two of my rudders break, I have an outboard.
    * If my steering gear breaks, I'll bolt a lever to the motor's nose flange.
    * If my outboard won't start, I'll lash a hatch cover to the lower-drive and I'll have a 335-pound tiller :!:
    * (it's a boat, not a lunar-lander) :|
Like it or not, Roger designed the Mac using common sense, plus trial and error. With ~6,000 afloat, it seems to me that it's worked pretty well, but I'll watch the mods you post and make adjustments as necessary. Meanwhile, I'll be wearin' out those sails (and rudders).

(Hopefully not inflammatory, just some California pragmatism).
BTW, above are observations on the real beauty of a Mac 26 ... versatility and reduncancy !!!

I go with the pragmatic approach myself. I have a very long list of mods in my mind though...but I fully well realize that most will just stay on the list forever and never get done. 8) I do a few things here and there when they bubble to the top of the priority list, but it is a painfully slow process. I spend a lot of time on this board thinking of stuff to do, but you won't find me here when the wind is blowing and I don't have something else I have to do. I try to enjoy the boat at least 10-20 times as much as I put any work into it...that was one of my promises to myself when I got rid of my pretty keelboat that had to be worked on more than I sailed it.

After the horrible hurricane season, us Floridians can finally get some nice sailing weather. (actually, its due to the hurricanes that I finally finished my outhaul, backstay and pelican hooks mods) But now that the weather is nice, I'm gonna enjoy my boat instead of work on it. I've been out a couple times a week lately..including 2 days last weekend...and even a couple hours this morning when I played hooky from work...ssshhh, don't tell my boss. :D I guess when our 6-8 week winter starts in a few weeks, it might be time to haul the boat to change the oil and maybe the impellor. I keep putting off the impellor job too, but its 5 years old now so I guess I better do it...

Frank,
I do enjoy the satirical.....even pointed at me....lol

But even I don't take that long to study and complete mods.... ;)

And I sincerely hope you never wear out your sails..... Though I do need another 150 Genny not as worn as mine... Pluuueeezzzz Santa.,.....

I try not to steer in rough seas with either the outboard between my knees, having graduated to lashed paddles to rudders and outboards...heeheheh

Congratulations I have read the 140/115 mods and it seems many are pleased with that particular change... but isnt it closer to 400 lbs not 300??

And just so its clear, the ruddern mount, (with in hull reinforcement) not just the bracket is what I am increasing in strength..

And I did like the lunar lander analogy, just a little more like a liquid lander for me..........lol or perhaps a very insightful comparison..there..

Seems theat a earth moon trip is about 2 days of coasting.....each way..

since about two days out sailing from the coast is as far as I care to be from the impact points of terra firma.. (Seas past 15 ft. 16 seconds is not comfortable for me.....)(I admit I am a weanie coastal sailor up here with my mac, and though I think that the boat has great capabilities I recognize that mine are significantly lesser...... especially after two days out from the coast of heavy seas out of sight of shore....... Like two weeks ago.... ) But if the boat fails me two days out.... it could have the same results..as a blown transit to the moon..... Cuz I cant swim till rescue....lol, and I am already sailing in a wetsuit....

And dont worry, I dont belittle mods like aluminum braces and brackets..
I was just trying to reinforce with vacuumm bagging and West Systems on the inside of the boat hull and transom.. so it looked unmodified......

8) I have found too many useful comments in your notes to consider your responses inflammatory.....,

I guess california pragmatism is a little different than Northwest version...
may be a little more necessarist up here....

HAve a great one....... and enjoy......all that sailable winter down there...

we do have some weather envy up here upon occasion...lol, and as far as wearing out sails....... they wear out fast enough up here..... c'mon up!!

Satire ???
I resemble that remark @!
(again)! :D :D

Joke I may, but the comment about your thoughtful contributions is genuine.

"Blue centerboards gybe better than white" punchline.....

Thanks Buddy.... :D :D :D
Sorry Stephen!
But please note carefully that, in my understanding, blue boards gybe while white ones jibe. I expressed no opinion, and lack adequate qualifications to judge, whether the blue gybe is better or worse than the white jibe. Can Catigale please solve this dilemma?

Blue is to White
AS
GyBE is to jIBE
AS
Mac is to Taser
AS
green eggs ARE to ham
AS
confused as I am!

Murv,
Can you provide a drawing and/or pictures of your mods?
Thanks
