Working Safely - Nifty tools to keep from killing ourselves!

Post by kmclemore »

I was thinking we really ought to have a thread on working safely, and to reference particular tools/accessories that encourage us to work safer... so, that end, I'll kick it off...

I *highly* recommend Dewalt safety glasses with BIFOCAL lenses (particularly useful for us 'old farts')... they work great, and they look pretty snappy too... they come in several different diopters, and they even sell them as polarized sunglasses, too... and the price is sure right, too... only $10.00! It's almost silly *not* to get them.

When working with fiberglass, of course you want to use ear, eye and respiratory protection, but most guys forget their skin... and end up itching like the devil for days with all the little fiberglass splinters in their skin's pores.

Here's a tip.... before you start cutting, filing, or making any sort of fiberglass dust, dust yourself down thoroughly with Baby Powder. No, not because the Admiral will like how you smell - although that *is* a side benefit - but because the baby powder will do two things:

- it dries your skin, helping to prevent the dust from sticking to your body
- it clogs your pores, preventing the tiny splinters from working their way into your skin.

Then, when you are done, go outside and blow your body off with an air hose (or you can use a good shop vacuum), removing all the dust before you contaminate another area (inside the house, boat, etc.).

BTW, keep a small bottle of baby powder on the boat, too... it works *great* to instantly remove sand from feet and bodies. I keep a small bottle in the aft cockpit locker so that I can 'de-sand' anyone who enters the boat.

Baby talc.. what a brill idea!

I get blamed for every bit of dust/swarf/glass shard etc that can be found in the house, let alone on me.

The only exception is when there is something stuck deep in me, in which case I present it to Mrs who will then take a bizarre pleasure in extracting it. If it's festered for a while and got pussy I get double points.

Wire angle grinder brushes are the best.. I come in looking like a porcupine with up to 20 wires stuck in me. NEVER use one of those without goggles.. pref a full face mask. I got a new lip piercing through that once, And they'll go through trousers AND underpants :o

I was just browsing thru the local Big-Lots! store yesterday and noticed two things. Safety glasses for $5 and a 5-10 ft fiberglass extension pole that would make a great whisker pole, with a little bit of work.

Baby powder huh?

NOW you tell me.
I just cut my old fiberglass sink out to replace it with a stainless one and the next day had a nasty rash on my hand from the glass dust.

Must remember that trick.

Yeah, baby powder works great. And as I say, keep some on your boat - you'd be *amazed* at how well it sheds off the sand when boarding or for just at the beach.

Baby powder (there are cheaper brands than Johnson at your local Food 4 Less or 99c store) also works on the feet between the feet and your socks (and in the groin area).

I have a funny (funny scary weird) baby powder story:

While traveling through Mexico we were stopped at a roadside military checkpoint and a soldier went through my personal bag. In it was a small glass jar (like a bacon bits dispenser) of baby powder I carried - - - which looked a great deal like a jar of cocaine to him. I had to go through all kinds of machinations with the powder to convince him it was not a contraband drug; whilst my Admiral sat laughing in the front seat. :x :D
