Fitting on foredeck

Post by chefmike »

There is a fitting on the fore deck of my 71 V2-22 that a short foreguy(?) attachs to. My question is it absolutely needed? I have looked at every pic of the v222 I can find only one has that same setup. Do I really need it? All the rest of my standing rigging is fine, but that short stay is frayed and needs replacing.

Do you have a picture you can post or a link to the other one that you saw? Might help,

I believe now that it was added after the fact. The deck fitting only mounts with two bolts to the foredeck with NO backing plates. The foreguy that hooked to it was mounted at the mast with a poor fitting bale under the spreaders and it was rubbing the mast. I removed it. There was a small block mounted there also, so I believe now a PO ran a small jib there kind of like a cutter rig-or maybe a storm jib. Just waiting now on my new halyards and bow pin from BWYachts!

I think some of the V22s were cutter rigged oiginally.

Are you sure you're not confusing the V22 with the V23 of Newport? As far as I have seen and read around, all of the 22's were masthead rigs.

Sounds to me like it was added, and not by somebody that knew what they were doing. If it was put there for a forestay it would need to be attached to the hull, and be able to withstand quite a load.

I used to own a V21 that I rigged as a cutter. You can the mods I made to her here.
