It's not a normal powerboat, it's not a normal sailboat....and if you knew us, you'd know that neither of our families are
"normal"- we're all crazy. As a former UCLA professor used to say: "If people think you're crazy, it gives you a lot
of lattitude of behavior."
The original name I wanted was COU-LIN BREEZE, the name of my father's first boat, a Chris Craft 22' Utility. He partnered with another gentleman in purchasing the boat. They used the first 3 letters of their last names to come up with the name.
The Admiral thought we should come up with an original name for ours. The first idea was 'Carpe' Diem - Manana(sp): Seize the Day - Tomorrow!, but we decided on something more original.
We get a lot of positive comments on the name!

I'm with Quebec1 in voting for "Laika", (not that we're really voting here). I like the story and name choice Ed!

Waterbear - made me wonder when I first saw it, very few people are even aware they exist (and they can be all around us if you look). Just so happens that I did my thesis on cryptobiology, which among other things involved photomicrography and the measuring the respiration rate of the various physiological states of the "waterbear", or tardigrade. They've been "reconstituted" after millenia (from the pyramids) and come to life again, albeit for a short period of time. So they certainly are nature's great "survivors".

Hope it is ok to slip a non-X or M name in here . The Kera Jane is named after Ruth's two daughters. Nothing too exciting, but they like it and that counts for something.

The name came with the boat, so we named the dinghy TENDERFOOT, and if we ever get a bigger boat we'll name it BIGFOOT

Catigale - named after Executive office Caitlin and Chief Petty Officer Agibail of course.

Since then, the girls have named the Island 17 the 'Cheetah" , the 10 foot dink the 'Chunk' (short for Cuttyhunk Island, their favourite place)

The WildestDream was named for a song by our favorite musical group... the Moody Blues. And my wife blurted out when we bought it..never in my Wildest Dreams did I think we would own a sailboat!

"Luna Azul"

Nothing very interesting.
The Admiral has always been a fan of moon artwork. We like the name Azul (blue as in faster blue hull). The Z sound in particular, we nicknamed our son Alexander "Xander". But it needed something to help it along. So we tossed out Luna Azul, it sounded good "Blue Moon". Our son said, "No, it's Spanish, we speak English." He didn't win. Luna Azul it was.

My great grand father came to america on his fishing boat to find a better life in america. His son's family still have a charter fishing boat out of sheepshead bay queens.
So the first time I ever went out on the family boat my great uncle says to me ATSA Mi boat the Ranger. So the name of our boat is ATSA

"Blue Heaven" -- pretty much named herself, given her hull color [the Admiral's requirement] and the way we feel whenever we're aboard.... after the Jimmy Buffett song "Blue Heaven Rendezvous", which references the funky little restaurant of the same name in Key West [one of our favorite places to visit].

In keeping with the kids names, my uncle Gordon named his dink the Wendami, Wendy, Dale & Mike.

Our boat is a whole other story. When my now wife and I got together we were like playful "otters in the waters" (we had a king sized water bed at the time). So when we got the boat as our wedding gift to each other, it was just another otter playing in the worlds largest waterbed. SS OTTER became the name that stuck.

(The owner uses this boat as a "funny-shaped travel trailer" for travel all over the USA. Another great advantage to the Mac!)

A friend of ours named his boat "Queen Mary" after his wife "Mary." His dink was named "Teeny Queenie".

Another named his boat "Patience" as a good name for a sailboat. His dink, "Impatience".
