As well as the name of your boat please explain the origin or definition of the name. For example,

COMFORTABLY NUMB: (From the song by Pink Floyd.) A state of mind brought about from the motion of a sail boat especially in strong winds or a long voyage. See also wind chill or frost biting. In warm weather with no wind this state of mind can be artificially introduced.

And maybe explain your avatar.

SCHOOL HOUSE STEVE: My name is Steve and I live in a 100 year old country school house converted into a 6000 square ft, 4 bedroom, 2 bath home. Cast cement walls, metal roof, wood burning central heat furnace.

Best O' Both
The first night of the CPS Boating Course, the instructor said 'Every boat is a compromise', and for us the mac seems to cover the bases pretty well. Best O' Both is self explanatory on that level, but there is another angle to it.

My wife grew up on power boats, their family ending up with a 37' Canoe Cove. I spent my summers doing dinghy sailing (some say that's more how I sailed than what I sailed). She was not about to bite on the 'sailboat'. Anyways,we were at a stalemate -knowing we wanted to get the family into boating, I was even starting to look at some of the suncruisers. A neighbour/boater dropped off some back issues of Pacific Yachting magazine that happened to include a write up on the 26M, and we quickly found it to be the best boat for us at this (that) time, and while I know that may change in the future, it will serve us well until the kids are out of the house.

Only problem with the name is when dealing with the authorities (CCG, USCG) and they ask for the vessel name over the VHF; too long for spelling out phonetically :?

Cease-fire:
Every day at work is a battle of one sort or another.
Any time spent on the boat/water is, in the truest sense, cease-fire time.

Connotations to making way without an engine or the bad-mouthing we may get from the traditional snobs.

Also, the VHF "repeat name 3 times" just might elbow up out of the clutter.

Hardcrab:
I grew up in Southern Maryland on the Patuxent River.
Maryland steamed hardcrabs are a way of life.
Also, a common local saying is " He's as dumb as a hardcrab".

What a great topic, many reasons to name a boat. As personal as religion and politics!

This time I wanted something different and noteworthy:

"LAIKA"
First and foremost is to honor the first living creature to orbit our planet. A young female pup taken from the streets of Moscow, destined to die in orbit alone and at a great distance from her home. She was truly mankind’s first traveler to boldly go (albeit unwittingly) where no living animal had travelled before.
Second, in losing her life, far from what she knew, alone, I truly believe her spirit will do for others what she was powerless to do in life. I feel she WILL guide this vessel ALWAYS home safely. In that her spirit remains, her memory lives.
Image

The "LAIKA"'s logo represents a boat beating to windward during a sunrise, representing the dawn of adventures to come.

The Avatar I use here (and all over) is representative of my rate when I served as a Quartermaster aboard a US Nuclear Submarine.
A Quartermaster is the assistant to the Navigator. The science and art of Navigation is truly my first love.

Laika wins the best dog name for a boat for me that's for sure, and that's coming from a HMCS DDH sparky who participated in sinking a number of US subs  during NATO war games.

Check here for the sound of Sputnik II and the heart beat of Laika (man's best friend..and fearless too!) in space. Very nice story!

Boat name "Waterbear"
Basically the name comes from their Bear like gait. I chose the name because this little bugger is a
survivor. It will go into a dorminate state (years) in which it is almost indesrutable, then apon adding water it will
return to living its life again.
Reminded me of the first day I took my Mac26X out. In that I bought the boat after its previous owener had hauled
it from the Mid West after little use, then left it on the street for at least 1 year. I put antifouling on, had the
engine/carbs done, checked things out put it in the water and sailed/motored away.

I would post pics if I could figure out how its done.
P.S. Waterbear my boat name, Key West definition naked, hairy, gay man in the pool.

I'll explain my avatar first, because it comes from my first boat - a MacGregor 19, which I named "Beija-Flor." That's the Brazilian Portuguese word for "hummingbird", and it literally means "kiss-flower." I made up that logo to go with the name, and put it on the stern of my 19 ... and it actually helped me sell the boat, because the wife of the fellow who bought Beija-Flor was charmed by the name and the logo.

Bossa Nova, the name of my current 26X, is my favorite sort of music - Brazilian jazz, you could call it; a music of intricate melodies and harmonies, underlaid with that Afro-Brazilian samba beat. The logo I've worked out for it is a wordless pun in musical notation....

Saoirse - Irish for freedom (pronounced Saor-Sha because Im from Dublin, others pronounce it Seer-Sha) . I wanted to use the Irish word for Peace but it doesnt roll off the tounge (tonge) very well = (Cuinas - pronounced Qune-ess or Siochain which means quiet)

And not lecturing but informing - before anyone thinks I meant Gaelic - Gaelic is the culture - not the language. The Gaelic language is Irish. In Irish the language is named "Gaelach". Sorry yes its a pet peeve and I get it a lot - Do you speak gaelic? No I live Gaelic, I speak Irish! (poorly).

Boat name: Bumpcity

Famed 70's music group Tower of Power referred to their city of orgin, Oakland, CA as "Bumpcity"

Three reasons I chose this name:

1. Tower of Power is my favorite all time band
2. I was born in Oakland, CA
3. When the boat gets going in the bay on a good day...it's like shes bumping and grinding to a funky beat!
