rebuilding rudder/tiller

Post by old guys sail »

I was given a 1980 V22. After I had it for 3 months the gentleman gave me the rudder. He had no other parts. Apparently he or someone took it apart to repaint it, and lost all the hardware and the tiller.
Does any one have a pic of the whole shebang I can use to know what I am missing? I either want to buy new hardware and tiller or fabricate something. Thanks for you help

http://www.idasailor.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=28. Idasailor apparently makes replacement/upgrades for the V22. The site also shows a picture of the mechanism. Looks complicated. Mike

Build yer own. Check out the resources on this site, like the search feature. Dig up old posts on this subject. Pretty cool 8)

You might even download the manual that came with the boat, also available on this site.

While doing a search I found this picture from another member of this site;

A computer is a cool tool, maybe not as cool as a DeWalt Radial arm saw, but it should be included in the process of building your new rudder ... er ah, the computer that is. :wink:

Great pic. I should have been more specific. I think reproducing the Idasailor or Mac design, from scratch, would be complicated. Unless you have access to the right tools and materials. I don't think it would be hard to make a rudder. I would certainly give it try before parting with $800-900. Also, I just made a tiller for the 26s from a Hickory link handle from the local farm supply. $7.95 :)

Hey! That's my blue V222! :D

I've got my boat hauled out of the season already, and planned on disassembling the rudder for a seasonal spar urethane application. Maybe what I'll do is take a bunch of pictures of it this time around; this rudder question comes up a lot around here. :) It's a very simple design, very easy to make or rebuild, provided that you've got the needed hardware. I'll try and get some pictures up over the next few days, when I get back to the boat and start pulling everything out of it.

You have the upper and lower parts of the rudder, and the tiller? If all you need is the hardware, that's not so hard. You onlt need 2 pieces of aluminum plate for the pivot joint and 2 pieces of aluminum angle iron for the tiller pivot. Then drill the holes and bolt it together. Here's what it looks like.

If the ( i forgot what they're called ) thingies the hold it to the boat are missing, any marine supply should have those. i know West Marine does.

Yep, that's pretty much what mine looks like too, with the only difference being a guide pulley for the rope, down by the waterline. Otherwise, all of the hardware and stuff looks the same. Glad you posted that, JoeVacs...I wasn't able to get over to the boat today. Raining here in upstate NY...as usual... :D

I have aquired a new 1976 V2-22 without a rudder but I do have the hardware that goes with it ( plates and tiller brackets ). I will attempted to fabricate a new assembly if anyone can give me the dimensions for the head and blade of the rudder. 1976 model would be helpful thanks.
