Canadian MacGregorss can now be used for charters with TC ok

Post by Bryan May »

Transport Canada have just recently made HUGE changes to the Small Vessel Safety Compliance regs which in sheltered waters<2 nm from shore allow vessels <8 m with less than 6 passengers to be legal charter operators with skipper needing only PCOP !

It's a simple 4 page 'Self Inspection' Application....no TC or CG staff crawling all over your vessel.

Last year was a 'test' in Pacific Region for TC, now it's Canada wide.

I'm working with the key TC staff to host Owner Workshops and explain how it works so owners can decide if they want to charter seasonally/partime make some $$$ and qualify for tax benefits related to their vessel.

Oh cool. Thanks Byran, that's interesting and actually something I was wondering about. I thought there'd be no way I could do simple charters.

Thanks for the information and thanks for letting this be posted. It is interesting for us Canucks, especially the tax write-off implications. I hope you will post more information and the webmaster will let it be shown. I don't consider this advertising just good information for us in Canada.

Thanks for the info, I personally will be attending a workshop Bryan is putting on. It would be great to do a few charters to recover some of the expenses related to owning and also get a tax write off. I have previously been in the commercial marine business and had a great time meeting people and giving them the opportunity to enjoy the experience of getting out on the water and seeing the world from a whole other point of view!

Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)

What is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card and who needs one?

The Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is legislated by Transport Canada and is proof that the holder understands the rules and regulations of Canadian waterways. To obtain a PCOC you must pass a Transport Canada accredited test (passing grade 75%). When you are on the water you must carry the card with you at all times. Your Pleasure Craft Operator Card is good for life.

What is a Pleasure Craft?

Anyone who drives a motorized Pleasure Craft under 4 metres in length must carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. To give Canadians time to adapt to the new regulations, Transport Canada is implementing the new law in phases:
September 15, 1999 - Now in effect
All operators born after April 1, 1983.

September 15, 2002 - Now in effect
All operators of power driven pleasure craft under 4m, includes PWCs.

September 15, 2009
All operators of power driven pleasure craft.

Pleasure Craft

Examples of pleasure craft:
•Powerboats
•Personal watercraft (PWC) – i.e. Jet Ski
•Canoes and kayaks
•Sailboats or sailboards
•Airboats
•Hovercraft (Air cushion vehicles, ACV)

If your water craft is fitted with a motor (whether it is turned on or not) you must have a Pleasure Card Operator Card.
