West Coast

Post by Kolohe »

Aloha all,
I am new here.
I am also "a want to be new to sailing"
I also think that I would like to be the proud owner of a MacGregor 26.
We live in the San Joaquin Valley in Schwartznegerland.
I am totally afraid to go to LA to visit the factory as no doubt, I would be hauling a new 26M home that day....and boy would the boss be miffed if I spent all of her new car money on of all things ...a mear sailboat.
My question....any of you out there have a boat within a hundred miles of Fresno that might be willing to let me come snoop around your boat and see one in person?
I will bring beer...or if you prefer, the boss has some really nice Nebium-Copola fancy wines (that I could probably sneek a bottle[ out).
Have a great day.
Mahalo and Aloha,
Bob (Kolohe)

Well Bob (Kolohe),

I can't tell you which road to travel, but I can tell you this ... I (as well as DayDreamerBob) who purchased an :macm: forgetting to confer with the Admiral, hehe :) at the time ...

The Jump was taken and he and I are still alive. I can't speak for Mr. Bob, but I can tell you this ... SHE FELL IN LOVE after about a few days out on a coastal cruise just off the coast of SouthWest Florida (Naples/Sanibel Island) areas. My wife is a grand 'ol Southern gal who is artistic and appreciative of natural beauty. Be that of nature and all that it offers. So it was a shoe-in, I quess you could say.

I lucked-out. :D :) :)

But .... yeah, I know. On the advent that you don't fare well, take heart! Let me know> I have a garage with plenty of clean cardboard you can sleep on!!!

:D :D :D :D

I think a factory visit is called for at this point. Be sure and ask for a demo sail. There should be no pressure to buy, just a boat ride. Good idea to have a 2" ball on your hitch along with a flat 5-wire harness. Call in advance, Mike's day off is Wed afternoon (something about a sailboat race) so demos take place 6 1/2 days a week.

You are correct.....Before i bought my boat I took a demo at the factory.....Bought 5 times the boat used just a few years old. The factory wanted to sell me a naked boat and motor for 33k.

Wow.... sorry to get people in trouble with the phone numbers.
So, now I have a question.
You must promise not to laugh.
And this question is geared more to Mike.
Would you sail a Mac 26 to Hawaii from SF Bay?
Do you know anyone who has done it?
Stop laughing.
My wife and I are adventurers. We have done things like touring the USA and Canada on a GoldWing (70K miles in 3 years)...and sailing around Tahiti on a 4 masted scooner....
Because of eye surgery gone bad, I no longer have a driver's license....so, I figure a police officer can't give me a ticket if we are 12miles out.
Hence sailing...the next big adventure....and sailing to Hawaii after a year or so of learning.
What do you think?
What boat would you recommend?
:)

Blue water sailing in a Mac? No way.
I suppose a person could do it, but the Mac isn't that kind of boat.

This is mainly a coastal boat with a big motor. A trip to Catalina, sure, to Hawaii, get a deep keel boat at least 35' long in my opinion. For one thing, a 26' boat is too cramped. Now I've seen people row boats around the world that are this size, but this is a small boat after a few days.

If I was taking a trip to Hawaii from Cali, I'd want something much bigger, much heavier and equipped with a lot of safety gear and provisions. I'd also want a wind generator and water maker among other things. And I'd only do that after getting a LOT of boating education. You can't hide under a bridge when a big storm hits in the middle of the Pacific.

The Mac is a fantastic boat for what it is. Just don't go blue water cruising with it.

Because we are twice the sailor....

To answer the question on Hawaii to San Fran - there have been lots of people on this board who have started that trip, but they never post the outcome...
