How many of you get sea sick?
I usually don't get sick on small boats, maybe because small boats don't go out in oceans or rough weather. Anyways last weekend we were in some pretty large seas in the Cape Fear River, and I lost my lunch several times. In the heat of the moment i would not have cared if the boat had sank, but looking back on it, we still had a great weekend, and I can't wait to get the boat fixed and back in the water. I refuse to let my motion sickness keep me off the water. So how many of you get seasick? And does it keep you off the water?

I do, on larger bodies of water. If you can see something on the horizon stay above decks and look at land. Otherwise, Dramamine for 2 days prior.
I generally get better before the end of the first day.
Then I get sick again when Im back on solid ground.

I have never been sea/car/air/carnival ride sick. However, the Admiral is subject to this malady, but only when she is below deck. I think that Scott's advice is good. Stay out of the cabin and maintain that "Thousand Yard Stare".

Re: How many of you get sea sick?
Good question. I was worried about it too at first, but it turns out I never got sea-sick on the Mac, except for one night when the jalapeno brats didn't agree with the beer. I do get a little wobbly on land, after a couple of days on the boat, but nothing extreme. We sailed in the Apostle Islands again last month and my friend who'd never sailed or slept on a boat before got worried. He took Dramamine every day at first, as a preventive measure, but towards the end he forgot about it and he never felt really sick... until he got back on land, that is.
He left some Dramamine on the boat, just in case future passangers might need it

Pete,
You said you had a breakfast at the restaurant across from Southport Marina before you took off into the river Sunday. Pray, tell us what you had for breakfast......
It may have something to do with your malady???

Re: How many of you get sea sick?
I've never been sea sick, I've been out in all different size stink boats and sail boats, without a problem, I've even been on a cruise liner that had to pull in the stabilizers as they were worried about them breaking, that was great trip, we were able to body surf in the pool due the movement of the ship it was great, the deep end of the pool went from knee high to over my head, we had really short lines to the food serving areas as well.
My Wife has some problem with her sinus, after a couple of days in the sea air they clean out and all's well with no further problems, my Daughter is like me, no problem.
I find that anytime I'm on the water I sleep very well no matter how calm or rough the weather is.

Re: How many of you get sea sick?
I get sick on cruise ships and long swells when I can't see the horizon. I've only once gotten sick on a small boat and it was because I hadn't eaten and my blood sugar was low.
Some tips:
Make sure your blood sugar is okay. Coke works well because the sugar goes right into your system.
Keep an eye on the horizon (or something that isn't moving like the shoreline)
Never go below if you feel queezy.
Keep hydrated. (again Cola works well to boost sugar and caffeine)
Fresh air or any air moving will help. This is why they blow air in your face on Mission Space in EPCOT.
Once you feel sick, there are few cures. The only remedy that is supposed to work in this situation is the electric band "watch".
Dramamine or Mescaline (the generic) work great for prevention as does real ginger capsules.
Oh yea, and don't mix bratwurst with tacos. Heavy foods in your stomach won't help.

When I was a teen I crewed on the final leg of the Cap'n Cook recreation voyage.
On the final leg around Kaena Point, we had high winds and following seas. I was laid out hung over the lee gunnel as we rounded for the press shots. They got a few good shots. Fortunately none made the paper.

Re: How many of you get sea sick?
We were invited on a lengthy sailing event Labor Day on a new Benteneau 46 ft (?) (awesome boat)...Great Fun. Anyway, The owner's admiral passed out Ginger Snap Cookies to all aboard (Ive never heard of this). But, anyway, these are supposed to supress UpChuckin'. During and following our trip, everyone enjoyed refreshments, treats, sandwiches, & dinner...and no problems.
I dont get sea-sick, however, I've noticed that the home shower stall "sways" after overnighting on the boat. Feels like the foundation is sittin' on a water-bed.
I assume Ginger Snap Cookies may help prevent Sea Sickness.

"MESCALINE"? Ummm... I don't think so. Dramamine is generically dimenhydrinate.RussMT wrote:Dramamine or Mescaline (the generic) work great for prevention as does real ginger capsules.
As for me, I find that Scopolamine trans-dermal patches work very well and have had no real side effects for me or my sons.
But hey, if you like psychedelic drugs, go for that mescaline!

Re: How many of you get sea sick?
Peyote is actually the name of the plant (cactus) that mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine) is derived/extracted from. A natural occurring psychedelic alkaloid... (I ran a drug counseling service in my past employment).
I've never been sea sick but I would bet that it would work...it's just that it is illegal

Just remember there are 2 types of sailors those that have gotten sea sick and those that are going to get sea sick at one time or another.

(For the record: Dramamine I is dimenhydrinate. Dramamine II is meclizine along with Bonine, Antivert and others. )
Meclizine definitely does the trick for me with no side effects - only now I'm definitely going to try mescaline.
