Cracked Rudder...Where to get Replacement?

Post by richandlori »

I was looking around my 2004 26M yesterday and got quite a shock when I found the top head of my port rudder badly cracked. I have only used the boat, that I purchased used two months ago, twice and think it was cracked when I got it. The inside edge of the bracket does look a little bent inward. I don't think the rudder will "fall off" right away, but I do think it either needs to be repaired or replaced.

Does anyone know of a good place to either repair or replace the rudder?
Also, is it wise to repair, or best to jsut replace? I called the Mac factory today, but had a difficult time getting through to anyone.

Thanks

One of mine is cracked there too (probably from heavy following seas) but I won't replace it until it breaks off. Afterall, we have 2 rudders and a motor: Enough redundancy to get home with.

Since you purchased the 26M from another party (used), you have no warranty. That is, only the original owner is covered.
Call the Mac factory and ask for Bill in Sales. He can advise you accordingly.
He may tell you to call a Mac parts distributor such as Powersailing Center http://www.powersailing.com/macgregorre ... parts.html

there should be no problem to repair a cracked rudder. it's only plastic :) ! and it will be much cheaper than a new one. check the web for fiberglass repair. there is a lot of help eg. at sailnet or west marine.
