Sounds interesting Stephen. Is this likely to be a motorcruise, or is sailing possible on this section of river? Where to launch? Details?...

I had been thinking about circumnavigating the shores of lake Seneca with my family during leaf peeping season, but this sounds nice too.

Do you have any more details? How much sailing is possible on the Hudson? It looks like up and back on lake Seneca is doable almost completely under sail with the prevailing winds.

Thanks, Steve

Seneca is really pretty in season (late Sep through all Oct) - winds are highly variable though - it can turn into an all motoring trip on Seneca. No anchoring in the Finger Lakes, except in the shallows, or if you have 1500' of rode.

AndyM can tell us about launches at top of Seneca (Geneva NY nearest major city)

Sailing is tough above Catskill NY - I would say day sailing only (dont expect to make cruising progress under sail)

Remember the Hudson is tidal and it runs 3-4 kts - more if there are heavy rains. There are large freighters all the way up to Albany.

Sounds like best to leave the mast at home and bring the Dunn Dorsal instead...outfitted with a spud cannon of course!
Are there any pirates on the Hudson?

How far North do you think you might get? We are in the Newburgh/Beacon area, close to West Point.
We were just out yesterday and the weather was great - not much wind but nice, sunny and cool.

Maybe we could meet in the middle somewhere.

We could either drive down to Newburgh and work our way back north, or come down from the north (I live 5 miles south of Albany, so 130 miles from NYC)

West Point area is beautiful, isnt it Paul...
