Chesapeake 2009 Labor Day Weekend?

In keeping with try something different again, we (some http://www.ncsail.org) are considering sailing the Chesapeake for Labor Day weekend.

We would arrive Friday night and stay at Virginia Beach. Setup, launch and sail Saturday to a point North like Deltaville. On Sunday cross over to the East and start sailing back and stop for the night on the Eastern Shores. Finally, return on Monday. This sail plan is only approximate awaiting a group vote.

Lots of fun in that bay. Big water, Big boats (ships), numerous light houses and many marinas.

Anyone else interested? We had 4 Xs at Edenton NC on 8/14-8/16 and had a great time.

So far we have a possibility of 3Xs (Compromise, Knot Shore, XX) and one Chysler 22 from NC. Maybe we will see SkiDeep2001 there.

Admiral Alice and I thank you for the invite. Unfortunately we will just be arriving home on the 6th from a week in Mexico. We will make it a point to get together with y'all in the future. We did enjoy the Edenton pics, thanks for taking the time to post ALL of them. On the bright side, isn't great that we MAC owners are so busy SAILING so many venues, that we have problems gathering at just one of them for days of merriment Alice and Stew of "THE RESTLESS TWO"

I am thinking about it. I had originally planned on going down the Dismal Swamp canal to Elizabeth City with my wife or going to Tangier Island depending on what the weather was going to do. Weather rough Dismal Swamp. Weather good tangier island was my plan but now I have another option to ponder. Thanks a lot, like my life wasn’t stressful enough!!

Hi all,

We've been pounding highway for the past 4 days, with Chinook riding happily on her "road warrior" trailer, destination: Chesapeake Bay. We expect to get in to our son's place in Lexington Park tonight, and will likely get the boat in the water on Tuesday or Wednesday before Labor Day weekend, at the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Station marina. I'm not sure about the prospects of meeting up with other Macs, since we'll have limited time to explore these great waters. We'd originally planned on a 3 to 4 week cruise, but we'll have to turn around and be back to Pax River by Sept. 16. Our son has just made Chief, and we are lucky enough to be on hand for his pinning ceremony. We will be sailing north from Pax River, so we can visit Annapolis and Baltimore by water, so don't know if we'll be in the vicinity when you cruise by. If anyone is up in the northern half of the Bay, give us a hail. Can't wait to munch some softshell.

The list is growing from the email and PM replies. So far 5 Macs and 1 Chrysler with 2-3 maybe.

My wife has family and friends near Gwynn Island (Stutts Creek) that are getting together (driving, boating, sailing) on Sunday so we thought about stopping there as an option. All options are welcomed. We are definitely leaving from VA Beach on Saturday due the fact we have house there for staging. We've been told the only nice/interesting place on the Eastern Shore to visit is Cape Charles. So we will probably stay there Sunday on the way back with and option to visit sunken WWII concrete boats at Kiptopeake State Park on Monday. The family at Stutts Creek now actually has possesion of an older Mac. Ed Davis use to own a marina in that area and has installed motors on some of your Macs.

That trip sounds awesome!!! I wish I could do it but I will be will be working. Just out of curiousity, how hard/dangerous is a trip like this for a beginner? Timmay!!!

With good weather and a GPS this is a very simple trip. BUT you need to watch out for the large ships and Military traffic. Make sure you have plenty of time and don't mess around in the dark.

Keep in mind if you have a 50+ hp motor you can empty the ballast, drop a few inches of center board and make most of these routes in 2-3 hours.

Billy can blast thru all three of the shorter routes in 3 hours with his 140 hp motor. Now that is sailing!

Hey, just saw your e-mail. Unfortunately, I sold my Mac last July. Needed the money for a wedding and law school tuition for the wife and myself.

The trip you're planning looks like fun. Remember that large ships take miles to stop and their wake is dangerous. Right of way doesn't really apply. If I were you, I would consider heading into Deltaville. There's a nice bar called Cocomos (sp?) on the water.

There's also an awesome island beach to the north called Cedar's Beach. It's at the mouth of Antipoison Creek in Little Bay. It's just just north of Windmill Point. If you do a search, I have some pictures of it posted. You can pull right up on the beach. It's also a very safe anchorage. There's always sailboats anchored in Little Bay on the weekends. I'll probably be out there on my in-law's power boat that weekend.

You should have a great time. It's a nice time of year since the water is plenty warm but most of the jelly fish have gone away.

Do watch out for VMRC (Virginia Marine Resources Commission) police if you're drinking. This summer they've been all over the place doing "safety" (read DUI) checkpoints on the water.

Looking at your routes I will give you some info on the areas I know because some of these are my home operating area. Yorktown expensive docking for what you get $1.75ft and Spot and Black Sea Base are biting there with occasional flounder. If you go there I will meet you there but go back to my slip for the night since it very close. With my trailer near by you all have support for any maintenance issues if need be. Mojack Bay has Speckled trout and many little shallow creaks to go into to get out of the weather which on my side of the Bay waves can get pretty big with a SE or E breeze. The cement ships have excellent fishing and some docking at a state park for some facilities. However this is the only place on the southern end of the Eastern side to some protection from the weather (still can be rough with a W wind) for a long ways so plan accordingly. The rest would be breaking new ground for me so sounds good.
