22" Wheel How Luxurious!
hydraulic steering
The previous owner of Sylvies Folie installed a Seastar hydraulic steering system. I cannot compare it to the original steering system, as I have never tried it, but I must say that I have zero play and she steers and holds any position I set her in, perfectly.TampaMac wrote:We all know how much play there is in the Macgregor steering.
Each of the connection points on the linkage bar have some play. The play is largely the result of up and down rather then the bolts having play because the holes are too large.
I added a bunch of stainless steel 3/8" washers such that each connection was tight when I slipped the cotter key in.
HUGE difference for about five bucks and five minutes.
Half the play I did have is now gone. The steering is really quite nice. It feels like a new boat.
I do have the SS whatever mod steering installed already.

22" Wheel
FYI, I contacted the BC Canadian vendor Chip referenced, direct, and secured a delivered order for the 22" wheel at $30 plus $25 S/H. Their email is mail@sailorsauction.com. They also again have the item on ebay which closes about 10Nov...min is about $25. Jack

I would have perferred the hydrualic steering, but the thousand dollars or so plus the problem of putting it in is a big reason for not doing so.
$5 in washers and 20 minutes at the most of time is a small price for a big improvement.

BayStar Hydraulic Steering Kit

Clearly you have a good return on your investment, both time and money.
I wonder if this BayStar Hydraulic Steering Kit (Teleflex) would work well?
A few brand new kits on eBay for under $500.00

stains
After Charlie hit our X was full of leaves. By the time Jeanne had been through there were a bunch of stains from them. I took an insecticide or yard sprayer (hand pump type) put 1 cup bleach and 3 gal of water. I sprayed the whole boat...nice and white...no scrubbing. The guy that pressure washed our mobilehome said that was what he prewashed with before pressure washing.

22 inch wheel Orders Anyone??
I emailed the Canadian guys this morning about getting the wheel - also am wondering if anyone on the East Coast (Buffalo to Boston) is interested in same - if I can get shipping costs down I would be willing to take a shot at a bulk order and delivering on my travels ...Final pricing/shipping would depend on how many takers we have.
You performance seekers out there, Chip and I swapped the 15 inch and 22 inch wheels back and forth a clear 0.5 (k)not difference in speed with the big wheel on the Hudson this weekend - my theory is its probably putting the centerboard into Gybe mode
Pointing was improved too - we got to within 25 degrees of the true wind with engine on.
Please let me know by email at

The best price by far is through Sailor Auction Inc. $55.00 including shipping. I ordered mine this morning. Im going to design a quick release for it so I can remove the wheel at anchor. I saw a Hunter 320 with one and the owner had a rack made on the lifeline stanchion to hold the wheel. Ill post pictures when Im finished.

I look forward to that.Timmy Z wrote: Ill post pictures when Im finished.
I disagree with your theory though. The Max26x as a shallow twin keeler. I think the improved steering with better control improves the twin keel effect. Better steering helps the captain stay on one keel or the other. This ability improves the high aspect ratio to present less wetted area.Catigale wrote:You performance seekers out there, Chip and I swapped the 15 inch and 22 inch wheels back and forth a clear 0.5 (k)not difference in speed with the big wheel on the Hudson this weekend - my theory is its probably putting the centerboard into Gybe mode

so a seven inch increase got 1/2 knot,
I wonder if it was actually the increase in circumference (and the operator sculling.....lol)
lets see.. that would be 47" circumference to 69" increase
So to get another 1/2 knot I should only need the to increase circumference another 22" to 91" total ( 29" wheel ),
Looks like I need to raise the pedestal another 4" inches....lol
I know, I know, knock it off..........heheheh

I switched to the 20" wheel awhile back (don't remember exactly when). What I do remember is that I was able to remove the stock wheel without a puller. Just loosen the nut, but don't remove it yet. Now pull steadily on the wheel while rocking the wheel back and forth. It should pop free after a few moments. Now just remove the nut and slide the wheel off.
Of course that may not work for you if your wheel is more tightly wedged than mine. However it if works, you can save the $55 you would have spent on a wheel puller.
