2 Harbors this weekend July 18th

Dave Clark and I are taking our X's to 2 Harbors this weekend if anyone can make it. I am going over on Thursday, the 16th, in my X to get a buoy spot. They take reservations for the line 310-510-4253.

Mike,
Dunno about cancellations, but you do give credit card info and pay at the time of the phone call.
They will give you the number of your spot on the line at that time.
Then, you pick-up your receipt at the harbormasters office on the dock whenever you make it in.

It sounds like you pay, even if you don't show up.

Be advised that the string line is limited to 25' boats per the rules.
Loosely enforced and perfect for our Mac 25M's and 25X's.

By the way, how did the ladder install go?

Thanks Bill, I did call them and they said no refunds, no big deal she also said getting on "R" mooring shouldnt be a problem friday night, so Ill just wait till I get there.
The ladder, mac-giever for sure, the biggest fitting west marine had was 7/8 and it didnt fit, but I bought the inny fitting, cut the welded blank on the ladder end, ground down the inny fitting where it screws into the ladder fittings I had, and works like a charm. Good thing I had a vice and die cutter in the truck, climbed it jumped up and down on it and it didnt fail so good to go. going to get me a megaphone to yell at people, know anything about them, quality wise?

They (Two Harbors Harbor Master) are telling me you can not make a reservation on the string line for Saturday night unless you also make a reservation for Friday night. But if you make a reservation for both nights and you do not show up Friday night, you will loose your reservation for both nights (yes - another simple concept made complicated, imagine that).

I wasn't that crazy about the string line anyway. I think I'll get there when I get there (some time Saturday) and if there is a mooring available I will take it and if not I will go around the corner and drop an anchor. Problem solved.

Hey guys, how long does it take to get to Catalina under sail?
I'd like to try it with my X someday & it would be really cool to tag along with some other Mac owners!

from marina del rey it would take 7-8 hours to sail at 5mph, Love sailing but thats a little much for me, plus the wind isnt going in the perfect direction to sail straight there. besides leaving when I do sometimes, theres no wind. From long beach maybe 5hrs or so.
Dave, I never did the string line thing, I think I want the mooring ball instead too. "R" is pretty shallow chances of getting on those moorings are good, You are coming from longbeach right? From what the harbor master told me yesterday they dont expect a big crowd this weekend. The economy?????

The string line "outside" has never shown less than nine feet at low tide on my depth finder.
I can't say about the "inside", never been sent there.
The harbor folks prolly worry about a deep keel and keep the Macs outside, not knowing.

I've only been on a ball once, the first time we went over with you and Karen.

I'd say it's six of one- half dozen of the other.
Neither has any advantage over the other that I can see.

About the only sure thing is it's not as far to the dinghy dock from the string line.

I really liked being on the stringline, it was spitting distance from the dinghy dock and very protected. There was some confusion convincing the staff that we fit there but once they understood it was nice being able to pay with a credit card and knowing exactly where you were headed. I am kicking myself for missing this, or any, MacTrip to the Isthmus! Last year we had six Macs on the stringline, it was great fun. I forget who it was but one even tied up to it solo so it itsn't a big deal to hook up.

cant find anything about the string line on Catalina website except there is one, Im sure theres a 4 and aft tie up, but is there a wand like the mooring balls? whats the procedure to get on the string line? Just in case....

Mike,
Exact same kind of set up as the ball.
Catch the wand, cleat the bow, walk the line back to the stern cleat, done.
Spot numbers are on the wand float.
Highest number (25?), at least for the outside, starts closest to the dock, counts down going away from there.
Do watch for which side other boats next to you have tied their stern to.
Cleating on the same side as others will keep the boat spacing fine for wind/tide shifts.

Yes, I am coming from Long Beach (Alamitos Bay). I will probably motor over Saturday morning and sail back Sunday.
