90 Hp 2 Stroke Yamaha advice

Post by Trouts Dream »

I have a need for a new motor (96 Tohatsu finally won't start)
Local dealer that sells Tohatsu and Susuki (in stock) also has a 2007 Yamaha 2 stroke that he will install for $5500.

I am looking for any comments from anyone that has experience with any Yamaha's and 90 Hp in particular?

I need to decide in the next few days.

I had a 150 Yama for many years on my bass boat. Yamaha makes great motors.

My research so far is reliable motor but expensive and hard to find parts when it does breakdown?

I was wondering how quiet these are compared to Tohatsu or Susuki?

I can't say on sound, as I've never listened to any side by side. Here in the Gulf south area, Yamahas are very popular and parts are easy to find. I also owned a 90HP Mercury for many years, I didn't see any big difference in price on parts. I owned the two motors for a couple of decades between them and never had to buy much of any parts other than changing the water pump every couple of seasons. If any make of outboard needs major mechanical work it will cost you major amounts of money.

I have a 98 X that came with a Honda 50. Kept having problems with it and wanted to upgrade to a bigger motor. Two years ago, I bought a used 2001 90hp 2 stroke Yamaha for $2500 + $300 fo shipping off of ebay. Installed it myself following the advice on here about using wedges and backing plates. Have been happy with the speed. About 33 mph with the wrong prop and 28+ with the one that gets it into the right rpm range. I'd have to look and see which pitch they are. It is a common motor and parts are easy to get.

I gotta say though that the noise is typical of two strokes and is loud. I just did the BEER cruise and motored most of the way. GPS wasn't working, so I don't have accurate records, but I ran a little backed off of full throttle (23-25mph) and got less than 2 mpg. For $2500 I guess its not so bad, but for $5500, I would shell out more to get an etec or at least one with EFI. I motor pretty frequently and it won't take long at <2mpg to make up the difference in $$$ that a 6mpg motor would cost.

If you are willing to go with one a little older you should beat that price pretty easily.
