FWiW,

I travel with the boom & sail covered & round wrapped like you would tie a roast. Nothing to flap in the wind. I then secure it to the ladder rack system I bought for my truck :wink:

I bought this contractor's rack on Ebay and put it on in an afternoon. You can still fit a hard or soft cab over the cargo area with this model.

While it wasn't a Mac mod, it serves as a boat / camper mod that's more than paid for itself. In this pic I'm packed, leaving Key Largo, FL for NY. On that ladder rack are: a 12' dbl Kayak, an 8' Porta-bote and my boom and sail :)
