Early Model 26 M

Post by J Dower »

I am looking ay buying a used 26M, but is an early release. It was suposedly manufactured in Mar 03, which would have to make it one of the first run of hulls.

Does anyone know of any issues wiht these first boats. Anything that was changed right away or needs to be changed?

I think there was a problem with the dagger board safety line.
Look at this thread http://macgregorsailors.com/phpBB/viewt ... gger+board
So make sure that safety line is installed on your M.

The early 26M's did not have a dagger-board safety line, an anchor roller, or a mast cap. If this boat does not have them, tell the owner to get them from his dealer. They also did not have holes drilled in the rudder brackets so the rudders could be pinned up, as well as tied, for trailering
Also, for buyers of early 2005 26M's, that did not come with a cushion to go aft of the galley, when it is slid forward, contact your dealer.
MacGregor supplies these at no charge to dealers that did not receive them, for boats they sold.

Earlier Ms also has a solid head door, later ones have a hinged door. The later ones are better IMO. I changed the swing of my door to fold out instead of into the head. Makes more sense to me.

The dagger board safetly line is a huge deal. Make sure it gets retrofitted if it is not there. also check that it is the right length.

The earlier ones also have the mast carrier on the helm, later ones have the 'radar arch' style stern mount carrier. It is easier raising the mast on the later ones from what I have heard.

Some real old early models had an x style mast raiser. Make sure it comes with (or buy) the later style. It is great.

Some earlier boats did not have the cushion cutout for the cooler.

Earlier boats had the starting battery at the stern. Later ones have a battery box under the stairs for the starting battery.
