What is a Transom release?
I like the smaller rudders on the X and just regelcoated and modified them and centerboard (mainly for strength)I also see no problems with the Aluminum bracket (except stainless bolt on aluminum)and I have been out in high winds beating in 4-6 ft. seas.
I also changed the centerboard line from wire to low streached rope,found the wire crips were wearing a hole inside the trunk, I now have a spliced low streach line.(wish they had a ball bearing roller at the 90 degree deck fitting).
The performance is great for a cruiser and I look at it this way. It's not how fast you get their, it's how long can you enjoy the trip.

Transom release is how much drag the transom puts on the boat at hull speeds. Squared off transom holds the boat back more than rounded, or tapered. Think canoe v. rowboat.
go and have a good look at a few and .My choice was mainly based on the centerboard vs dagger board,i sail in shallow waters with a lot of sand banks and being a novice i wanted to give myself room for error. I love my boat for the advantages that both the x and m have.
There is however one problem with both models,you eventually contract a mental illness called modificationencepalopathy,there are several known cures for it and they generally cost a boat buck or two,in extreme cases such as Highlander there is generally no hope,a rich aunt may help

Before the M there was no X in a Mac web site video with high winds and big waves. Question is could an X sail the same 45 mph winds and 18 ft waves as was on the new Mac video ???? I GUESS THIS IS A CHALLENCE TO THE X's FOR THERE OWN VIDEO IN BIG WINDS AND BIG WAVES. This will settle the question M or X ?

Isn't there a Macgregor 26 that has done some pretty extensive trips.
I think its named Zeno's Arrow owned by madmike.

I wonder if the new "M" is designed with a back stay ? Seems to me without a back stay, anything over 30 mph winds would be risky.
Hey Trout: Yes, its an "X" with Zeno's Arrow. The rumor is that he had plans to sail to Hawaii.
And, as you probably know already, CHINOOK, has taken some extensive trips -- in an "X" with really great web site documentation and pics (worth reading and seeing if you, or anyone, haven't done so)

I don't think you need to be reminded but consider if he was able to do all that even with BastonJock's illness - what he could have accomplished with an especially a white one.
well ive had my white hulled x at 9 knots under sail and an M owner was there as witness ,the hull speed of the blue hulled m is 6.88 knots so i guess that prooves the white hulls are faster.
I do remember the m owner suggesting that we might have to reef if we got any more wind
I knew this would be fun. My wife had our M at 9.75 mph on the GPS surfing 4 to 5 ft wind waves running down wind with only the 3rd reef up in 35 mph breezes while I cooked burgers on the aft mounted grill about a month ago. I guess some of the seasoned X owners could keep up, maybe, but not against my race driven wife. Ha Ha

I want to brag about once beating a kid trying to race my Mac-X on his Sun Fish. I left him in a wake, slammed the door...before he knew what happened. Shameful doing that with a snub to a 7 or 8 yr old kid trying to learn to sail. But, hey, when an old salt has a chance to show off -- its 'git 'er done. cruel..I know
er...anyway, well, most is fact -- I didnt snub 'em. Just grinned.
