Chance to buy a Mac 25 1988
I have a chance to buy a 1988 mac 25. It is in nice shape, with lots of extras. It has a six hp johnson ob, that is about twelve years old. nice sails, and a good trailer. the guy is asking 2,500.00. I know him, nice guy, and have been on the boat. Is this the really good deal , that I think it is? I would really appreicate some input on this. thanks, Jim Nolan

Sure sounds like a good deal if the sails are in decent condition. Even if they aren't its not a bad deal if you like the boat. Was that a model with the winch operated steel keel plate? I think that was the same boat model I was on once a long time ago. It sailed very comfortably and seemed like a good design. 6 hp should be fine for normal usage. You might also ask for opinions on trailer sailor macgregor venture forum. There are a lot of owners of the older models on there that I'm sure would have good advice.

Thanks for answering, Craig It does have the crank up keel. I have a 26X, and also have a buddy who would love to have a sailboat. I sailed within twenty feet of this boat thursday, and his sails were beautiful and, a real nice shape. I'm just a little afraid to recommend something, that I know so little about. I wonder if they would get mad, if I posted this on the 26x site? there must be a lot of guys there, that would know a lot about a boat like this. thanks again. Jim
Jim, I would say its a very good price based on your brief description. In '98 I bought an stone stock '84 Mac 25 that would meet your description for $3500.
Additionally, my boat had a lightly used Honda (4-stroke, of course) 7.5 hp long shaft of approximately 1997 vintage; original sails including mains'l (good), working jib (good), and 150% genoa (near new); very good original interior fabric with the typical poor original foam; portapotti; 4 x pfds; 13# anchor and ground tackle; older but working VHF; good trailer condition; very good standing and running rigging; undamaged and in great shape fiberglass throughout.
Basically a trailer away and sail away boat! And, the first several times I sailed it just as I bought it. Sure, I've made MANY changes and upgrades since then in order to prepare the boat for the Sea of Cortez, but I think mine was a VERY good deal.
