Is there suppossed to be flotation under the dinette table?

Post by escape »

Hi, we are new MacSailors with lots o' questions arising as we clean up our newly purchased 2002 Macgregor 26X, Escape.

We found flotation under the dinette table and are wondering is it factory? We do not want to remove factory flotation for storage. Thank you!

Welcome to therapy!

And no, my 02X doesn't have any floatation stuff on the bottom of the dinette table.

Curious tho, if you can post a pic of what it might be.

No, flotation is not a factory item under the dinette table or anywhere near the cabin sole. For stability when flooded, flotation needs to be up high, on the ceiling and under decks. that's according to the Mac factory manual of 1998 26X.

If it is at all removeable I'd remove it soon to find it maybe the previous owner might be hiding something like a hull repair or ballast tank repair.

It's very normal for people to move flotation material around the boat storage area.

I advise you to move it to the bow storage area under the V berth.

That area should be filed with white foan material...

I think that it is the only area from where lose parts of white foan can come...

There's more than just that, JT - or at least there should be. On the MacX models there's plenty of removable lose white foam blocks under the anchor locker (above the v-berth) and even some under the cockpit seats (above the aft berth).

Thank you to all who answered our question. Other areas mentioned have flotation. We removed a nice built in under the table to take a gander and it appears no repairs where made-good point though for potential purchaser!

The previous owner of our boat circumnavigated Vancouver Island in it. He was a sailor and he rigged the boat to sail and took good care of her. He moved up to a 41' Benateau because he caught the sailing bug from sailing his MAC! Says plenty good about the MAC.

We hope to have many great adventures. Hubby and I are working the boat over so we are both familiar with her.

Safety is first for us. We are on the bridled Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington and will be spending most of our time exploring areas where she is loosed from her upper dams.

Any advice from river rats will be appreciated.

It may have been removed from other locations for mods that were done like cut outs to install inner hatches, switch plates, elect. panels , storage lockers !!
Any floation I removed for mods & could not re install I put back in other places as close as possible to its original location ! so as not to upset the original floatation balance ! their is almost enough mty space in the cockpit location to double the floation in that area !!!

That makes sense as the manual specifically states we are not to remove any flotation-WE WILL PUT IT ELSEWHERE as we would like this space for storage. Thanks!
