Hull Deck Separation
Any advise on separating the deck from the hull?
I have removed all the hardware from the boat, inside and out, including the keel. I removed the hull\deck trim which I am going to clean up and polish before reinstalling. I have removed all the old caulk from the joint. I have not lifted the Deck off the hull yet. I was worried that it might be hard to get re-alined. The problem is there is still dirt in the joint that tends to come loose and land on the fresh paint.

Re: Hull Deck Separation
Its one of those jobs thats getten a bit out of control. What started as fixing some leaking hardware, became repairing some gelcoat cracks to replacing the bulkheads, and on and on. At this point my thought is to get the hull in perfict condition, or at least close to it. Then I can work on the harware knowing the hull is done. The reason for lifting the deck from the hull is to compleatly replace the seal which is not longer doing its job. As far as it being a big job, well my origonal plan was have it back in the water by spring. So we will see just how big of a job it is.

Pete, I don't know about your boat but I am going to redo my X.
Take off rub rail and loosen the stainless steel bolts @6 inches O.C. and put wood wedges to seperate hull and deck 1/4 inch. I will use acitone to clean out the area between hull and deck useing a dremel wire bit and than enject slow dry 3M 5200 than retighten bolts and cover outside edge with same than put on new rub rail.
If you only sand the outside hull to deck joint and chalk with 5200 it may not prevent water leakage.
There is a big diffrence in 3M4200, 3M 5200 fast cure and the best 3M5200 slow cure.

DaveB-- As I also live in C.C. and own a 26X, I would be very interested in watching (or giving you a hand if needed) during your hull/ deck joint repairs. If you have enough help, I'll gladly stay quietly out of your way and just observe. If this is O.K. with you, please PM or email me with details.

Re: Hull Deck Separation
I lifted the deck off the hull yesterday by straping it to the roof in the garage. With it done, I kinda whish I had done it sooner. It Would have made everything else I have done easer. At any rate in just a few hours I was able to clean the dirt and cauck from the top of the hull, wash out side hull with acitone and wet sand. I have a few small areas to fill but other then that the hull is ready for paint.
The deck is also going to be a lot easer to work on now. The only problem is I need to get it in a position where I can work on it. Right now its still strapped to the celling on my garage. My plan is to finish the repairs to the deck and then mount all the hardware before setting it back on the hull. I will post pictures when I get a chance.

Re: Hull Deck Separation
Here is the deck being lifted.

Here I am backing the hull out from under the deck

I made a quick stand to set the deck down on so I could work on it.

In this last pic there is a bare patch of fiberglass. Looks like something was removed. Any ideas what was there?

Hi Pete,
I am really impress by the extend of the work you are doing. If you have a chance, could you make some picture shot on the inside of the hull (detail of the keel boss).
For the extra patch, Is that correspond to the drain area?!? On my MAC 25, I have the water drain for the deck at this location.
Keep us aware of you repair work, May be you can post all the pictures on a website like Photobucket.

Re: Hull Deck Separation
Unfortunately I have not been able to do much on the boat this year. I have been tied up with projects at work and have not had a spare moment. Also the weather had taken a turn for the colder and wetter which makes it a little harder to get motivated. The good news is that I got lots done during the Christmas break. Also should have more free time to work on it from here on out. I will continue to add pictures to photo bucket as I go. And I am still on track for being in the water on Memorial day.
