I need to do a little work on the spreaders on the '77 V-22. I can make new spreaders simple enough. A section of aluminum tubing and something on the end to hold the stay. I also have access to a machine shop so it's not a problem making parts for this. The question is what properties should a spreader have? If you could make the best spreaders how would you design them. Should they be allowed to pivot like the original ones do? Does the stay need to be able to slip through the spreader? I assume that it needs both of these features but am not sure.

Re: spreader basics
No and NO.
The folding spreader is nice for trailering, but crap for a sailing rig.
The uppers should be locked to the spreader tips so as not to slide. Spreaders should point upwards about 5 to 10 degrees also.
Get some 26X spreader brackets and install them on your mast. (the rigid ones)
