Has anyone sourced an alternative to the 12 gal (46 litre) or 6 gal (23 litre) tempo tanks that fit nicely into the fuel storage area? I Haven't seen them around for a while now. I would be happy to purchase them in the US and ship them to Aust. if needed.
I believe this was discussed in great detail when it was first announced that the Tempo tanks would no longer be available. Try checking out the "Advanced search" area located at the extreme upper right corner of your screen. Using the search apparatus can sometimes be exhausting, but I believe it will supply you with an answer.
Many have found that the 6 gallon "Duratank" sold with Evinrude and Johnson OB motors fit very well in the spaces on the M. Four tanks are somewhat expensive, but the benefits override cost. Each tank gets a fitting, and the hose is swapped when empty.
Six gallon tanks are portable, unlike the 12 gallon size.
With a good search, they can be bought in the low $30's each.
Blue Reef,
I rechecked the place where I bought my DuraTanks and they still have them for $37.99 each.
Two years ago, they were $32.50.
(Other searches turn up prices in the $60.00+ each range. Talk about a rip off.)
Not a bad price for high quality tanks that fit the M perfectly. Cannot comment on an X fit.
I don't know how to paste the link, so here is the info if you are interested.

Search for: allenmarinesalesservice.com
Go to the Products page.
In their "search" window enter: tanks
The third or fourth tank in the list is what you are looking for.
Don't forget to source the four tank fittings needeed to fit your brand of OB
ON EDIT: The DuraTanks are shown in Johns photo. Notice the good fit with the seat down.
I have the same, 2006 M and same pedastal as John Christian, I bought 2 of the same 6 gal tanks. they do fit nicely. The boat came with a 12. Nice arrangement.

The 6 gallon Evinrude tanks here are over $120 and the Tempo 12 gal was $139 and notice in the latest catalogue from one wholesaler they have gone so probably not available here now either.
I found lots of options with the 6 gal tanks but no replacement for the 12. I bought an extra on e-bay last summer, to increase the spare parts inventory. You might want to set up a search there. They're usually reasonable
There are plenty of 6 or 6.5 gallon fuel tanks to choose from, but not all tanks will fit well in the space alloted on the M.
Some are to tall so the seat won't close fully, some will not allow for two tanks to fit in one space, (being 6.5 gallons).
Four Duratanks fit well, if not perfectly, as you can see above, with some small space left over.
No one here has reported of any other brand that can make that claim.
Portable helps with refueling options for those who slip their boats, or have short trips to launch.
They will not be tied to "marina" ($$$) gas or towing the boat to the gas station as those with the 12 gal single tanks.
We find ourselves using just one tank for most of our use on a typical weekend, just slow motoring out of the slips, etc.
The other three tanks stay at home, freeing up a lot of extra storage space.
The option of all 4 if we are motoring any distance is nice.
Other than an upfront slightly higher cost, finding any downside to four tanks will be hard to do.
Perhaps it's not worth it to retrofit , but if you are starting out new, give it some thought.
Boblee yes 2x 22ltr hulk tanks fit side by side and a better fit than the evinrude tank (they dont obstruct the cockpit at all) and there is still a little storage room on top for tarps etc

Actually Bias still has the 45l sceptre tank which is the same as the tempo, I see the 22l one you have and it looks better as it's lower (stop the seat rising) but just a little longer so it would hang out 15mm more which is nothing, works out cheaper too.
Have never noticed them before but living where we are never get to see anything "in the flesh" it is all mail order unless we get to Melbourne and then Whitworths are usually out of stock.
