Maybe 4 padeyes and 3 hooks would be the perfect number for a Mac length boom.
Sure, if you regularly need 6 bungees to secure your sail. My Cat has 2 padeyes and 1 hook. Seems to be ok.
Any recommendations on a good thickness and length for the bungee, maybe 3/8 inch and a foot longer than the boom for the knots?
The original bungee on the Cat was smaller than 1/4. Very thin. I am replacing it with 1/4. As for length. I think it should be taught when stowed to allow plenty of tension when deployed as well as staying out of the way.
Put an eye-nut on the port side of the 1/4" bolt going thru the forward end of the boom.
1/4" bungy cord from there, thru the bails for the vang and the mainsheet, to the eyestrap for the clew outhaul.
Put a locknut, a fender washer, and another locknut on the starboard side of the 1/4" bolts used to attach the mainsheet and vang bails (you might need longer 1/4" hex head bolts).
Hold the boom with your left hand. Reach over the mainsail with your right hand, grab the bungy cord and pull it over the sail and under/around the fender washer for the vang bail (first) and then the mainsheet bail.
It's a good safe inexpensive system that works.
One hand for yourself and one hand for your boat.
You don't have to drill any holes.
I've used it for years, put it on hundreds of Macs, without any problem that I'm aware of.
