attaching wood piece to galley fiberglass hull

Post by ernie »

I need suggestions on glues, adhesives...etc.
I am wanting to attach (small items) baskets to inside hull. The piece that would be attaching to fiberglass is wood. I have used epoxy adhesive and after some time the baskets just fell right off. What kind of strong adhesive that will permanently stick can I use for this job?

I suggest that you go to an automotive paint store and find the 3M two sided adhesive tape used to stick trim to the sides of cars. That stuff will hold tightly when everything else falls off. I've successfully used that stuff on my boat for years.

Another option is to make aluminum brackets and stainless sheet metal screws.

Good luck.

You will probably find your answer in that thread but if you did not prepare the fiberglass surface, specifically remove any mold release compounds, none of them are going to stick. I would roughen up the surface, wipe it well with acetone (sp?), and I like the West epoxys from WM, a little pricy, but coat the wood with a little bit, let it dry about 3 hours, mix up the peanut butterish mix of epoxy and filler and slap it on.
I do not like gorrella glue, it expands and makes a mess (cause I use to much) and the Kodak stuff sticks to my fingers far to well but it is the glue of choice for many many marine applications .

Now the question is - will acetone clean off all the wax and other mold release compounds?????

Yes. A better choice is MEK, but with both make sure you've got lots of ventilation and no sources of ignition, as both are highly flammable and noxious.

Absolutely. Working with any harmful chemical requires proper protection - gloves, eye protection and, if in an enclosed area, respirator.

You can always hire the neighbors kid and save the cost of the respirator!

I glued a 3/4 inch thick strip of oak hardwood to the INSIDE of our galley using c-clamps and construction adhesive. I then attached two small oak bins to the OUTSIDE of the galley using stainless steel screws through the bins and the fiberglass and into the oak strip. This seems to be pretty secure.

ATTACHING SMALL ITEMS

Post by puggsy »

to avoid drilling holes all over the place my solution on small items is to use rubbery silicone sealer and a large wooden base plate. It can be nicely finished to match the window surrounds.
Over a large area, the silicone will not let go at all and the option is always there to remove it by the expeditious use of a long thin bladed knife. Once you use glue, its NOT changeable. Silicone IS.
I have three nice brass clothes hooks on each side of the galley, with clothes and rope hanging off them, They are fixed with screws to their original base plate...which is silconed on...and they have yet to let go.
I have also used the same method to mount the base [ nylon] of my hand held / steering compass...nylon screwed to wood...wood siliconed to the black perspex plate on the rear of the pedestal.
Hope this helps...Puggsy 06 :macm:

I used sikaflex marine to glue wood blocks for the pump and supports for the access covers under the aft bunk.
If wanting to hang anything on the carpet inside the hull we have used velcro succesfully for clothes bags and rod holders.
