Grills

Post by corkscrew »

I am looking at 3 grills, wondering what peoples thoughts are.

The Magma II Kettle
The Original Magma Kettle
The Springfield

I am leaning toward the original Kettle...it's cheaper and will suit my needs. Do these grills hold up against wind blow outs?

Also, what is the rail size for MACS? For the clamp....or is there a cheaper Home Depot item that does the same job?

Thanks :macx:

The Magma holds up nicely to wind, sea, motion etc. The mount is quiete solid. It needs to be threaded for the Grill to thread to at its base, so not sure if a there's a third party unit that's suitable. I believe the Mac uses a 7/8" rail. Standard Magma mount fits and holds well. You would want a bungee cord to hold the lid cosed tight while sailing/motoring. Not a must, but I prefer it that way.

All a persoanl choice but when refering to the cheaper Home depot model, three words of caution.
"Quality Stainless Steel"

Not all steels are made the same and a boat environment is not the same as a backyard environment.

I have the force 10 (225 I believe). mounted on the aft port quarter and I absolutely love it. It's never lost it's lustre even after being exposed to the elements for 2 summers. Heats up nicely, has locking clips to keep the lid down and it's really easy to keep clean. I remade the mounting bracket to turn it 45 degrees on the rail. I agree with trout, make sure that whatever you buy is made of good stainless steel (marine grade) and you shouldn't go wrong. Since I purchased the grill, I use my Origo in the galley half as much.

When you go to the store, take a small magnet with you.
If the magnet sticks to the grill, don't buy it. It will rust.
A magnet will not stick to a "Quality" grill.

Here's my quill on grills

1 You have to buy the 'adapter' to get the Magma mount to fit on the 7/8 Mac stanchions. You can use it on the pedestal table mount (if you have one)

2 Get a grill with a piezo lighter so you dont have to fuss with matches sitting on top of your fuel tanks

3 You can get a little three leg stand which lets you take the grill off the boat for cruising on shore.

I got my Magma off ebay used at 1/2 price of new.

FWIW - I was just at Defender Marines website and they seem to be having some good prices on grills in their Memorial Day Sale. I am sort of but not sure if I want one attached to my railings but these deals seem pretty good.

One thing to think about is the fuel canasters storage. Do not store used or new fuel canasters in side the boat, a leaky canaster can sufficate you or blow up your boat. After reading about these hazards I bought the additional valve to hook a hose to and a 1.5 gal propain bottle and mounted it in the motor well easily. The 1.5 gallon propain bottle replaces about 10 regular bottles and no recycling for the throw away bottles. The extra cost for this setup pays for its self in a year's use if your like me averaging 4 nights a week on the boat. Also I sleep better knowing I will not sufficate.

Stephen, here's another option. I mounted a 6lb slimline tank on a rear stanchion. Custom ss mounting bracket to hold the tank.

Propane Bottle for illustration only - I bought mine at Defender on sale.

This was the best deal on the mount. Tank bracket.

Mine is set up to my galley stove, and set up to tee to the barbecue also.
All safety equiptment installed of course.

I'm convinced this is a terrific idea, but the cost of the bottle has always stopped me.

The one Dan has linked about is about $150.
The one in this catalog is about the same price.
And the stainless mounts are another $100, or more! :o

Defender doesn't seem to carry it any longer.
Dan, just to help w/indexing the market, recall what Defender's price was??

I went with the magma kettle gas grill....surpised...they do in fact come with a basic rail mount. Thet charge like $50 for the extender mounts...you can get the same parts at lowes and home depot to rig the same system for about $5 - rip off for the magma parts.

I paid $143.99 at the Defender sale-probably could get it cheaper, but with no shipping charge it worked out.
Defender still has them

It's a lot of money, but I really wanted a propane system that would work for long term cruising(Exuma). Eventually,I will mount another tank on the other side. This should give us 2 weeks+ between refills. The rear stanchions on the M are perfect for this tank.
